    Very good price indeed.

    Is the "No Trade-in" confirmed?

The DVD Writer is tempting but seems like an over-kill for me. The cost of DVD media, although cost per byte is cheaper, is still high though. Where the hell am I going to shoot and compile a load of pictures for 4.7GB.

I am droping by this Sat and would be going for the external 52x CD-RW. Think its 700MB is great value for storing my pictures..

    Just my 2 cents...

WHY NOT!? All drives are basically supported via application like Toast.

In fact, for iDVD... there's a hack on to enable burning to non-internal drives.

You can still burn CDRs using the DVD writer. Video Pro at SLS is selling the 4x TDK dual format at $169. So between a $129 CDRW drive and a $169 DVD writer, its quite a no brainer.

I'll need a CDROM and PSU. Still wondering should I pick up the TDK writer. Hmm

The last I saw at Challenger. the DVD-R (1-time recordable only) 10pcs going for S$50+ bucks. The DVD-RWs are the killers. For the same no. of discs, close to S$90 bucks. . But super capacity somethinglike 4.7GB....

Well that's about 1.5 months bac but don't know if the price has dropped. Hope it has so that it can benefit more consumers.

It ranges from $1+ to $10+ depending on brand and speed.

Examples would be Verbatim 2x DVD-R (Made in Japan) at $30/15pcs and Mitsubishi 8x DVD+R at $25/5pcs.

Some can actually burn at higher speed than rated.

Actually, I'm going for an external one so that I can burn my CDs in office, home or even pass it to my brother to use. I believe the S$169 DVD ones you might be comparing to are the internals.

If I were to get the external version for the DVD-writers, its going to cost me at least S$370 ot S$400. Difference too great lah..Else I will also go for DVD.....as I do agree with you that if the price diff is like less than 50-70 bucks, it will of course make sense to use a higher technological product...

    yeah.. supported by toast...

i'm talking about natively with itunes, iphoto and idvd without using patchburn II..

below is an review found on xlr8yourmac.com on this 880N drive

    "Reviewer's Name: Jim Schnoor
    Date Submitted: 2/18/2004
    Drive Type: DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives
    Drive Interface: IDE
    Drive Brand: TDK
    Drive Model Number: 880N 8x DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 2x DVD-RW, 32x CDR, 16x CDRW, 40x CD read
    Driver Used: Apple Hacked
Mac Model: Apple G4 Dual CPU DDR
Mac OS Version: OS X 10.3
Reader Comments: Boots fine. Is seen in itunes, desktop, using PatchBurn II. It is a little flaky about ejecting, Most of the time the door opens but occasionally I have to reboot to get it open. Burned 25 Disks Straight from iTunes. Will NOT work in my firewire case (Fantom supplied case). Seems to work GREAT in Toast 5.2.3. I don't have 6 so I'm not sure.

PatchBurn seems a little "unreliable" (to me at least). I think it's a great program and there is really only so much that Chris can do with it. With all the different drives out there it would be extremely difficult for it to work with everything. I works great on my TDK. I tried backing up and reinstalling Panther (10.3.2). No change. I even tried changing the settings of the drivers in PatchBurn II with no luck. "

DVD-/+R and RW price has dropped a lot

dun buy at challenger lar, sim lim square can get it at much cheaper price

btw, R and RW price is about the same, the most only $2 different

but RW has shorter lifespan, rate 1000 re-write

too bad... just get any 3rd party one like LiteOn, works just nice.

what you asking for it's not native support but application-specific support.
