good point. or different results. in a way this is understandable. say you're shooting with canon, i would like my 2nd photographer to be shooting in canon as well. or if i'm using a certain focal lenght, i would not want my 2nd photographer to be using the same..

    possibly..

any one can buy a camera, but...

    really?
i think a portfolio is enough. if you like the photos then it dosnt matter what equipment was used.

    just a thought.

    Cheers!
well, be the change you want to see.

i can understand things like focal lengths.. beyond that...... perhaps shutter speed for amount of motion blur captured in certain things, or how much to freeze action. but sometimes the questions asked really perturb me.

some people just want to know, i guess. everytime i reply them i try to include the caveat that going to the same spot at any random time and dialing in those settings with the exact same equipment might not necessarily give them the same result.

because you've seen him play. what if you don't know beckham. would you care about what he wears?

In my opinion, the attitude is very narrow if one felt that the question is uncool. It is just a question of ingredient; it is common to ask what is this pastry made of? How does one make it?
It is unhealthy to the photography society to self induce negative thoughts to a innocent question. The problem is not about the question, it is people's suspicious intention sensation tingles when approach by strangers.

If one felt that people asking a plain simple question as to what gear you are using is consider bad, then "hi, how are you" will be the worst, hypocritical question ever Be open photographers, don't detach and be a enemy from the society. Photographers (including pros) are near the edge of being labelled as geeks by me.

    nah, it is more like...

what oven did you bake this pastry in?
what bowl did you put it in?

    sometimes, anyways.

Thank Gawd for dividers (between urinals)!

Back to the point. It doesn't matter about the gear. But the fact of the matter is, many prospective clients do ask about equipment. As if a "up-to-date" inventory of equipment will guarantee good work... Haizzz.

In this forum it just means u got alot of spare cash. U will incur jealousy and people starts making it is the person behind camera statements first.

True as it sounds, I dun think there is denying the fact that regardless, clients will probably have some reservations when they see the wedding photog covering their say weddding event with a PnS ( besides, there is so much more a DSLR setup under those lighting conditions can excel in )

wa, then i don't know leh.

fair enough if the client knows what is going on, i.e. sufficient for the print size they want, etc.

can't think of any other reason for most mainstream purposes..

yes, of course... but sometimes the questions go beyond all that, if you get what i mean.

i mean, i don't blame anyone if they are new. it's just a simple matter of pulling out the exif anyways.

like ortega said, this is about clients, i guess. it seems a bit weird that people whom we can assume to have limited know-how (else they won't be sourcing randomly, i guess) would be asking about the technicalities. i mean, if i'm not a photography hobbyist, i won't even know what sony dslrs there are. i think beyond alpha 100, it exploded with so many numbers.

It is common for customer to ask a series of questions to gather information in case something goes wrong. That doesn't mean gear is the specific reason but in the event the end result got very bad for x reason, there are leeway (information) for discussion.

The worst situation is when something happens, you asked the victim, what happened... don't know. What is his name, not sure. What material did they use..... din tell me. Blur blur. Why because people like to act noble or too shy, dare not ask question.

it is useful to put their equipment to shame by having a great portfolio using humble equipment

the "photographer's eye" is not something that you can just spend money and buy

my point exactly. the work matters. not the equipment. if a photographer has great photos from a wedding and covered it with a 450d and not a 5d mark II i would still think that's a good photographer.

would you automatically think a person walking around with a 5D mark II is a good photographer?

that's the reason for this thread.
