    Hope that helps: http://www.great-landscape-photograp...ng-filter.html
Of course there are many other possibilities. Whenever the features and characteristics of a CPL can support your intention it can be used. E.g. it can act as simple ND filter as well.

here are some i can think of

    - when i want the skies can be a notch deeper blue ( depends on angle of placement ) and saturate foilages ( to various degree by cutting down on reflective surfaces )
    - when i want to cut down reflections and glare from the surface of the water to reveal more details beneath
    - when i am desperate to increase exposure but i got no ND and i cannot stop down any further ( or watever reason ) - the polariser cuts down light, acting as if like a mild ND filter
    - when u put two polarisers together they can act as a fantastic variable ND filter

but i realise apart from cutting down water reflections, i am increasingly using less and less polariser.

Eliminate/reduce reflections and saturate blue skies(bringing out the the rich colors).
Do note it cuts out light as well, so can double up as a 2 stop ND.

1st you need to know what it does
then you can decide when you want to use it

    a polarizer cuts polarized light
