Take a walk in Sim Lim Square.... there are the usual Maxtor or Seagate..... but also cheaper 3rd party 1-2 GB Ext HD. Not too sure is 'portable' 2.5" HDD comes in 1GB already...

    repost -

Yup.... saw Western Digital has a 2.5" HDD... selling for $349.... but 1GB is the biggest there is.

    Yup.... 1TB (typo).

SLS isn't that bad.... just know what you want and how much you willing to pay. Anyway... go to HardwareZone and download the price list for the shops there. Fuwell is one of the recommened shops for PC DIY-er (much like MS, John3:16, CP to us).

You may want to wait for IT Show 2010 this 11-14 March 2010 at Suntec.

Usually show price is better, all brands and variety in one place to shop.

By portable, I think you mean 2.5" HDD.

1TB on 2.5" is relatively new, therefore expensive. Cheapest I've seen so far is $319 and only available by Seagate.

    A 640GB costs alot less at $189.

theres a disadvantage the bigger hdd space u get.

cos once crash everything gone. so its safer to get two 500G then backup on both. a bit hassle but worth the trouble.

    2.5" seagate = $319

    3.5" seagate = $135

not sure if the 3.5" one needs power supply though

    never mind... stupid joke...
I assumed you'd be bringing the HDDs around to back-up images, etc... 3.5" is more troublesome but still portable enough for someone with a car...

That's just my opinion, coz I chose 3.5" for the better price:capacity ratio

so far I think every 3.5" HDD requires a power adapter, which means.... yet another thing to carry around.
When I bought my first 3.5" external HDD years ago, I was told that the larger drives were less prone to crashing... something about having its own power supply, thus not prone to voltage dips from the USB port, etc... Don't know if it still holds true nowadays.

USB power or self power makes no difference.
as long as it is USB2.0 the transfer speed is 480Mbps.

They should have some that have firewire connections. If really needed, I believe you can get some usbtofirewire adaptors.
