Default From Bam, Iran ....

Hi, here's a photo from my Iran trip (man takes an opium break):-

I took over 1200 photos from that trip, but for now you can take a look at the article and the rest of the photos (about 20+) here:-

and

Some of the excerpts from the articles is being carried by today's edition of "Today" newspaper. Please do take a look at the above and let me know what you think (of the pictures and articles). Thanks.

Thanks everyone. Glad you liked the article/photos. No, I'm not a pro-PJ (I like to think of myself as a NG PJ wannabe ). I will try to get some more nice pics up in a gallery as soon as I can, and I clear the usage of some of the photos. BTW these articles were done up for journalistic purposes. As mentioned, excerpts can be found in today's edition of "Today" paper.

Hi,

I believe that man is having a shisha. You can have one here in Singapore down at Arab Street. I am quite sure it's not opium. Correct me if I'm wrong.

"Shisha is a Middle-Eastern smoking tradition that began hundreds of years before the invasion of the big American cigarette companies and is one of the most common and interesting sites of the Arab World."

"Shisha is tobacco mixed with molasses and fruit flavors and is smoked in a hookah. Shisha tobacco is not your typical tobacco."

"Hookahs have for centuries been a tobacco-related product and the image of them as a pot or opium-smoking instrument is largely of Western origin."

Quoted from http://www.shishapipe.net/

Cheers!

Yes, except that it also smells like opium - the characteristic sweet smell, instead of the smell of tar/tobacco. In fact opium was a major problem in the camps - kinda open secret. But the device itself is as you say, a shisha. It can be used to smoke a bunch of things.

Hi,

Exactly! Shisha comes in a few flavours. I know there's grape, rose, apple, strawberry, pineapple, apricot, mint. That's why it smells sweet. And it's no way near the kinda strong pungent smell of cigarettes. If you happen to visit Egypt, they have it in almost all cafes there. It's like smoking cigarettes to them.

Anyway, my reason for my post is that I don't feel anyone would take opium for breaks. It does not make sense to me.

Cheers!

Well, it's not a "break" in the usual sense of the word. These guys have no jobs to take breaks from. But I will try and confirm with the next team going up. My translator told me it was opium. And it smelt like opium too. Looks black etc. On top of which, opium was a known issue in the camp as well. Opium is cheaper than food, and I would wonder how they would procure fancy flavoured tobacco in a devastated town. I could be wrong, but I will try to confirm it.
