Default No Warranty Card???

Hi Fellow Club Snappers,

Today, I bought the SB800 from Alan Photo and after I go back surprise it did not have any warranty card. Called up Alan photo and they told me is like that, any problem within a year, bring back to them? Anyone encounter anything like dat before? Is this really true as that guy told me?

I guess I got the export model but it works pretty well with my new D70 (juz collected today) and F65.

I am pretty confused now. Appreciate your kind advice.

Thanks.

Then you did get a 100% gray set.. AP is well known for this. I really hope they honour the one year warranty they promised.. but if your paid 650-660 for it.. then I think you should go get the warranty card.. coz if you buy it at that price.. you can get the same set from CP or MS with the local warranty.

Ever experience with AP on my 85mm f/1.8 lens. Also no warranty card, a gray set with only $30 cheaper. After that I told myself to stay away from AP for more Nikon stuff.

However I understand that their cameras do comes with Nikon Singapore Warranty.

if it really concerns you.. then you should go back to them.. ask for the warranty card and pay the extra 30-40 dollars. Though you would have to probably kick up a major fuss.. and then never go back there.. I know many people make the same mistake as what happened to you.

A word of caution to all.. please always check your warranty cards, and that you warranty cards are stamped Nikon Singapore and that you have the retailers stamp.. and that you have a receipt.. and that the sr no's on the warranty card correspond with your item.

It is sad to hear this.

This tactic is also 'gray' - they do sell at good price for good product except with that little thing missing that leaves one with that un shoik feeling. It could have been one of the very few roses in that area... well almost.

I have a 'unshiok' feeling sometimes back but I cannot complain anything except for my inexperience and lack of product knowledge. But I believe my ignorance should have been obvious during that transaction and a simple comment could have helped me then. Since then, I did not go there though I still tell others that shop is not bad. CP and MS (and particularly MS) takes time to explain to me - even though when my purchases were of small value.

If any AP guys is reading this - I am sure with the relatively good name you have now, you can really made it to be the rose over there!

They should have at least tell their customers that they're selling grey stuff. Then it is up to individual to decide whether to get from them or not.

If boboshooter fails to get the local warranty card, what can he do? See Case's help for refund?

You should have checked prior to payment..anyway, flash seldom fails during the 1st year, and problems will arise when warranty is over.

I doubt seeing CASE would do you much good in this case. Coz we all know that tactics of such shops.. but we all just never learn.. or listen to advice from people. Now I guess it is a matter of hoping that you did get a good set and that nothing happens, and that if it does.. they honor their so called shop warranty.

The main differenece between a gray and local warranty set is the one year warranty and the resale value of the set if you do want to sell it within a year.

After one year of use (which is 'over in a blink of an eye'), a gray set is no more different from a local, warranty set.

With careful use, most equipment will last longer than the one year warranty and hence, I don't mind paying for gray set, since they are also new items made by Nikon but are cheaper as they don't have the yellow warranty slip.

I used to be very worried abt buying gray stuff and always buy stuff with warranty.

I realised that I was just paying more to "set my mind at ease" and nothing more.

For DSLRs, I would go for local warranty set as there is "free CCD cleaning".

Unlike Nikon USA, who gives 5 years warranty for lenses and stuff, I don't find paying more for just 1 year of warranty to be worthwhile.

Most items that I have bought, PCs, printers, electronics, film cameras, lenses, PDAs.......etc never fail in the first year so to me, paying more for the 1 year warranty is not worth it.
Unless the warranty is 2 years or more.

For AP, grey sets are normally cheaper than the warrantied sets from CP. However, if you insist on sets with warranty from AP, their prices will get much higher than CP. They're well known to quote you prices without warranties to attract you. They even e-quote me grey set prices!!!

They'll just jack up above normal street prices after finding out you want warranty.

Btw, their during 1 year bring back to them is that they'll send in on behalf of you to Nikon, charges still apply when Nikon makes repairs... these charges will go to you.

QUESTION:

In this case, will Nikon Singapore accept if we bring in ourselves?

Just to add on what gadrian has replied. Nikon Singapore only accepts the warranty card if it has "Nikon Singapore" chopped on it. No two ways that I know of.

ummm..what I mean is sending in after the 1 year (warranty over). I hope the flash don't fail me for 1st year. Wondering after that, is Nikon SG willing to service the gray set, of coz with charges?

Considering the fact I still ask the person in AP if got problem within a year, can I send the set to Nikon SG for service and he nod his head!!!

Now I know why Sim Lim shops have such bad reputation. I learnt my lesson, no more AP in the future!!! I check out prices in Cathay and TK photo. All prices sama sama +- a bit. But most importantly, the sales pple care to explain things to u!!!

Lesson Learnt : Ask for WARRANTY and match the serial when you buy your camera products!!!

ah, just to confirm, if I bring in my secondhand Nikon with a US serial number, would Nikon Singapore agree to service it when I have no papers or anything? And what's the rough price of a CLA on a F100?

Thanks!
