Unhappy I suck at photography. Help.

    Hi Everyone.

I just got my SLR in November 09. I got interested in photography after influence from my friend. Its been awhile since i started, yet i feel that my pictures have not been improving at all. I also think that my pictures are horrible. Is this normal when you start? Will you improve? I really dont know.

Read up some basics of photography on the web. There are quite a lot of stickies in CS as well. Once you're comfortable with your reading, start experimenting on your camera. Post here for expert advises and the most important thing, do not give up trying

    it's ok..

after a while, you will think you have improved

then 6 months, 1 year down the road, whatever you thought was bloody good would be really sucky again. i think up till date i only really like <20 of my shots. that's what, 3-4 years.

my advice is, use the fact that you are not meeting up to your standards positively. look at more pictures. feel the drive to improve, take more, get the right people to criticise them, get the wrong people to criticise them, learn. understand. assimilate. improve.

if the attitude is right, maybe you might not have a knack for it like some of the more talented people.. but if the attitude is right, the only way is up. for sure.

just remember, don't beat yourself up until you feel sick of photography. that is the worst way to go about doing things. also, don't give yourself so much slack that you start thinking that "oh, i shoot xmm, my friends say WA CHIO means i am improving".

make sure you always, always think before you take a shot. that is what differentiates a photographer's thought process from snap-shot takers, there is thought behind it. conceptualise, ask yourself : what do i want to show? what do i want to see? what do i want to remember?

keep shooting, and remember, always enjoy yourself.

photography is not a lifetime hobby, and it teaches you a lot of things. one important thing is that it tells you a lot about life - what you put in, might not necessarily be what you get out of it. but the faithful always get rewarded.

    cheers!

the way i see it...shoot enough bad photographs and its only a matter of time before you automatically start producing better photographs.
You wont see me much less remember me but i am the guy who makes you look good.

Then again, if you are really skilled in taking bad photographs and can replicate them in just any situation...might want to consider "Fine Art" or "Abstract".

Agree partially with this. I think shooting more helps us learn, but must learn something lah. If one year down the road still shooting bad photos (discounting bad days - we all get those) then have learnt nothing from all the shoot.

But I find that shooting a lot help. Maybe I'm getting lazy also.. last time shoot 18/20 photos will look good. Now shoot 500 photos, maybe 5 photos will look good maybe my perception of "ok" photo has changed.

    Keep on shooting.

If u shoot a lot of photos per day, the possibility of having a few photos nice is higher ?
Unless u know nothing about camera.

Everyone have different view or expectation to a nice photo.
Go to the library to borrow some books to read.

Maybe can show us some of your photos here ?

hey just wanna encourage you by saying that all great photographers were once noobs too. no one starts out knowing everything.. but to know everything you can't do nothing.

so just keep working at it, and you'll improve!

Going by yr nick I believe that you are still quite young. That being said, you have a long way ahead of you to go in your photography journey. You only started like wat?? 2 months back?? Come on dun beat yrself so hard about it. I'm sure not everyone is a natural born photographer. We all learn from our mistakes (make sure u dun learn though) and then find ways to improve and do better.

Just like my signature " Life is like fotography, we can't develop without the negative" Take whatever comments u get thrown at u and learn. Shoot more, post more, learn more. good luck!
