Thread: Camera & X-Ray Machine

    Default Camera & X-Ray Machine

Does the X-Ray machine at the custom spoils the camera and its sensor?

My friend complained to me that after her camera went through the X-Ray machine, it stop capturing images on and off.

Nope, I don't think so. My camera went through custom x-ray umpteen times already. Still ok
    Take the shot!

depends what camera or to be more exact, the strength of the x-ray machine.

lol. Must have been X-Rays from a Nuclear Bomb!

Totally not possible. In fact x-rays are often used to inspect some electronic components.

sounds like user issues...my camera been through x-ray machines a couple of times and it still works...

how about the memory cards or built in memory usually included in such devices?

Many people have the misconception of ionizing radiation (x-ray, gamma etc. etc.) having the same effect as non-ionizing radiation (radio wave etc. etc.) and vice versa.

For the last time, subjecting a DLSR through a x-ray scanner will not turn it into a Hasselblad nor will it invert the binary data saved in the storage device.

hmm. anyone can back it up with real physics? cause i cant think well now.

as far as i know, when em waves (which include xrays) hits a metallic surface, it emits a little electricity. just how significant i dunno. its the photovoltic effect or somethign

    my physics getting rusty...

On a typical flight for me from SG-INA-SG, my camera gear will be subjected to the following:
    Singapore
    1: Before Immigration - X-Ray
    2: Boarding Gate - X-RAY

    Indonesia -
    1: All Hand Carry - X-Ray

    Going offshore:
1: All Luggage Scanned before getting on Plane - X-Ray
2: If need to take Helicopter to final destination - X-Ray

    Coming Back:
    Indonesia:
1: Checked before going to Check In Counter - X-Ray
    2: Checked at Boarding Gate - X-Ray

    Singapore:
1: Sometimes a Kiasu Security Check getting off Plane - X-Ray
2: Because I look so Cool, 50% of the time scanned at belt - - X-Ray

I do the above on average 1.5 trips amonth to Indonesia. Camera gear still working.

What is really mindboggling especially at Changi, normally you have a X-Ray before Immigration, but they dont require you to remove laptops from bag. Yet at Boarding Gate, laptop must be taken out of bag, some may require you to boot the laptop.

You would think they would have 1 standard for x-ray.

Not really a issue to be concern with, there are dozens of other permanent damaging effects on unhardened electronic components by ionising radiation though they are mostly limited to high-energy nuclear events etc. etc.
I would be more concern with exposing storage devices to magnetic sources like metal detectors.

lol. my greatest worries were tat the batteries in my flash gets exploded once it goes through xray ~~

No, my pants metal zipper always sparks off a beep...........then they have to use their metal detector and waive in front of my pants............

I believe the worry about x-ray machines and camera originated from film cameras era. X-ray can and will affect film so photographers used to request hand check on their film canisters when they go through the x-ray machines.

plus when ur flying, the aircraft is exposed to far more radiation than they receive on the ground...

There are speculations that Single-Event Effects (SEE) as a result of cosmic radiation exposure in the atmosphere may have affected the ADIRU and could be a contributing factor in the Qantas Flight 72 incident and the crash of Air France Flight 447 along with other similar incidents affecting the A330.
