Default Disappointed with AF-S DX 18-70mm

Tried out D70 with the bundled 18-70mm yesterday. Looking at the LCD display, barrel distortion is quite serious at 18mm. At 18 mm (27mm for 35mm equivalent), a decent lens should not show such a obvious distortion. Maybe I expect too much on this lens. Don't know if it is WYSIWYG though.

I honestly feel that the barrel distortion on the 18-70 is acceptable. And at the price of 400-500. I would ask for too much..

Take the 2750.00 17-35 f2.8.. you will also see barrel distortion.. Remember.. this lens is still technically an 18mm, at at 18mm on a film body.. distortion is expected. But only due to the 1.5 Crop Factor.. your FOV becomes 28mm.. again.. techincally it is an 18mm lens.

After going through so many sample shots I am fairly convinced that it is one of the best lens you could get for the money. Can you give any lens by any manufacturer in the same price that offers better quality shots in the same 25.5 - 105 range on a DSLR??

Other than the other comlaint regarding the black matt when used in a film camera, the other complain is that the hood casts a shodow when used with the D70 built in flash at 18mm. Remember to remove the hood when using the built-in flash.

Optically I can't really complain, a bit of chromatic aberration towards the edges. Hell, even gadrian's 17-35 has CA at the edges ! Saw it last night!

Yeah it does.. the 17-35 is not infallible.. try the D70's internal flash with the 28-70.. about 1/3 of your image will be black.. hehe..
