Default Question on F90x.....(some sanity although drowned in the D70 threads)

Hi,

erm....kinda paiseh that i am asking this question since the Nikon forum is flooded with D70 threads.....

Heck.

anyway, need to ask the F90x users out there.
Do you have a problem taking a photo a person who is off centre in the Manual mode??? When i have the person off centre, my camera doesn't fire! It seems so much easier to take a photo of a person who is off centre on my manual FA!!!

Another question is, does the matrix metering work in Manual mode ? (since we have a choice of selection here.....)

please advise.

thanks.

Sounds like the AF priority is preventing the camera from firing. I'm not sure on the F90x, but the F5 and F100 have shutter-release priority modes so that the camera will fire regardless if the area under selected AF spot is in focus or not.

I used the F90x for 5 years. No problems with off center subjects.. however due to the fact that the F90x AF sensor is either wide or center spot, you will need to focus on the subject first.. then recompose then fire (P, S, A, M) in AF.

However when using it on (P, S, A, M) on MF there is no problem with it being off center.

Or you can use the AF-Lock after focusing the subject in the center.

gadrian is correct. Sometimes in low-light situations, the AF cannot lock focus and I get the same problem. That's why I switch to MF in certain situations just to be sure that I get the shot. As for your second question, yes matrix metering should function even in M mode.

1. u have to focus lock n recompose. only got 1 focussing point..so no choice. alternatively u can try 2 focus on something else u know is of about he same distance away from u as the intended subject

2. u feel faster on the manual FA coz the process of "manual focussing just turn a bit->looks in focus->snap rite away" is actually a bit faster than "focus lock n recompose"

3.in general, metering mode is usually independent of exposure mode...check the instruction manual to verify the details

Focusing
If you feel more comfortable doing MF, then by all means switch to MF. Try to judge focus on screen without having to rely on the viewfinder to indicate focus is in. If you can master this, you can MF on any part of the screen, instead of having to focus using the centre of the viewfinder and then re-compose.

Metering and AF/AF are 2 different things. If I remember my 90X correctly, matrix metering is when you have an AF lens attached. If you have a manual AIS lens, then I think you have centre weighted only.

If you have an AF lens, you are able to select matrix metering, irregardless of whether AF or MF.

But do remember on the F90X, I think metering is based on the centre of the viewfinder area..

Current 90X users, pls correct me if I am wrong. Its been quite a while since I last used my 90X.

cheers

FOcusing manually on the F90x B-type clear matte screen is really a skill.. not easy..

though you can change your focusing screen to a split horizontal B type clear matte focusing screen something like the one in the FM2.

The electronic range finder also provide focus assist. so when the object that you are focusing on.. is in focus.. it will show that in the view finder..

You would also have to use a cpu lens, like an AF-D lens.. AI-P lens.. for the matrix metering to work..

thanks for all your contributions! i found out the problem in my Manual focussing mode. It was because of my mf-26. Apparently it has some form of lock function when it does not fire when the object is not in focus. hence, i can't take off centre photos......
