Thread: Which lens for Taiwan Trip?

i think it depends alot on which part of TW you go to. i went with my 18-200 and found that it is not wide enough for scenic shots at taroko. 18-200 is useful for taipei walkaround. I'm going again in Feb this year still considering whether i shld get a uwa for taroko and alishan or just stitch them together to save cost and trouble of carrying extra lens. Danger is that if stitching fails then thats it, no more going back.

    It serve me well

I went Taroko too but just stitch the pix together seems ok to me.

    why?

    1) can shoot wide
    2) fast AF and IS, 4stops
    3) 200mm focal length, enought for you to shoot far
    4) decent boleh
    5) can take xmm discretely
    6) no need to switch lens (bird already fly away by the time you switch lens)
    7) with this lens, you cannot miss any important moment.
    Thanks for you inputs =)
I'm sorry but I don't full agree on all the pts u stated.
    1) can shoot wide (17-40mm can also shoot wide)
    2) fast AF and IS, 4stops (Agreed that 18-200mm AF is fast but not way is faster than a 17-40mm USM and not to forget 17-40mm is having a constant f4 apeture)
    3) 200mm focal length, enought for you to shoot far (I full agreed on this and that the main reason why I am considering to bring this lens instead =))
    4) decent boleh (Prefer the Bokeh on 17-40mm)
    5) can take xmm discretely (Lol, I second this, can get away un-noticely)
    6) no need to switch lens (bird already fly away by the time you switch lens) (This is another plus pts!)
    7) with this lens, you cannot miss any important moment. (Agree!)

I will be at Taipei and mainly hanging around Taipei 101 since the regional office is located there. I will have 2 fully days of shooting over the weekend and I guess I will go to further places. =)

I understand your concern during your trip.
Sad to say I do not have a UWA lens and have not really try pano stich =X

Just bring ur best IQ wide angle lens w/ weather seal..
Also dun forget to have some form of dehumidifier as lens fog up easier in Taiwan during this season.. u dun want to bring the fungus back !

    Hey, thanks for reminding!
You bring up a very valid pt that the 17-40mm is weather sealed whereas the 18-200mm is not! I almost forget that the other reason why I choose EF 17-40mm vs EF-S 17-55mm

I went to Taiwan last year. I have to say my Tamron 17-50's range was great. I did not have any thoughts to have a longer lens. However, I do admit I would appreciate a wider lens.

I see. Then 17-40mm might be useful for ya. Nevertheless, 18-200mm would provide you with more options if you need the zoom at times though I personally don't find myself using much zoom during the stay in Taiwan.
