I have to agree wif the wabbit on this one... assuming you are the main photog . But if you are there as the 2ndary photog, then it is fine for you to learn.

A fast lens with a reasonably useful range (18-55, 17-50) would serve you well. And depending on the situation, keep a longer lens (70-200 or similar) handy for candid shots from an unobtrusive distance.

You really don't want to take the responsibility of screwing up the couple's one-in-a-lifetime wedding photos until you have some experience as a backup photographer understudying the professionals for some time.

If you are going as a backup photographer, it doesn't really matter so much what lens... A fast 50mm or wider or a f/2.8 standard zoom are good choices if you have one of them.

Most professionals I see carry two bodies, one with a wide angle zoom lens, and the second one a fast normal or short telephoto lens.

I shot a wedding with a single 50mm lens. FF format.
Sometimes, really wanted to cry because no zoom, wished I had a midrange zoom.

Personally for me, I would go for either these 2 setups:

    1) 24-70mm f2.8 & 70-200mm f2.8, rich option
    2) 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5, more budget option

Both are more than adequete imho. Moments are more impt than the lenses.

id' go for the trinity with a dedicated full frame on each lens. a voice activated light stand and a reliable rf triggers for at least three spped lites,

    that would be really sweet!

I recommend the 200mm or the 300mm if they hired a pro.

If they never hire, any lens you have and do your best.

hey, side track abit, im using a 500d .
thinking of shooting some extras for my friends wedding.

Lens i have in mind is 17-50 f2.8 from tamron.
If the lens has a constant f2.8, how do i take sharp photos instead of shallow dof.

pardon my noob question, coz im unsure whether i can goto f5.6 or f8 for sharper image rather than blurred background effect for all the pictures.

    thanks

Depend on what you are shooting and the lighting condition.

Constant f2.8 means f2.8 is the widest aperture you can go throughout all focal length. It is not stucked at f2.8, you still can stop down to smaller aperture f4, 5.6, 8, etc. to get deeper DOF
