Default Power of Nikon AF-S 18-70

Please find my initial attempts using D70 and 18-70 lens. I have compared it against the AF18-35 and AF 50mm/1.8

excellent side by side. i felt initially that the 18-70 out resolved the sensor on the D70 with a more dynamic range as well as higher contrast. In terms of of convolution, the boke appears to be just as pleasing.

does anyone here feel that this could be attributed to the fact that the 18-70 is a cpu lens?

Try shooting against newspapers and crop out a section for comparision. Testing the 18-35 and 18-70 is enough, the 50mm after all is a prime, no point comparing against a prime. I'd love to see the tests more intensive on the 18-35 and 18-70.

I wouldn't mind posting additional comparisons, any idea how I can get the rights to attach photos on CS site itself?

Every Nikon D and G lens is CPU lens. You need the CPU to do proper metering with Nikon newer body. This is also the reason why your old 50mm f1.8 won't meter with D100.

This lens isn't old, the D lens primary function is to provide the depth information and not for metering. It is used for the flash to determine the distance the subject to be illuminated and not try to illuminate everything else - creating more balanced ambience lighting.

The other point, even without the D lens designation, the lens has intelligence to communicate with the bodies, otherwise the digital camera would not have picked up the focal length details in EXIF. What I think you meant are the older AIS lens, PC Nikkor and even D lens attached to AI type teleconvertor and extension tubes. Even some manual lens with P designation has CPU.

This is the wrong thread for this discussion, but I feel obliged to straigthen the fact since it may give wrong impressions to fellow DSLR owners.

Kind regards

I find a green cast in all the 18-70 shots, anyone else notice it?
