Default Panasonic DMC-LC1....5mp on 2/3" CCD equates 'cleaner' images ?

please enlighten me on the following.......

with the recent release of 8mp digital cameras like the 828, 8080, 8700 etc etc...they all seem to capture images on a 2/3" ccd.

Now I noticed that the latest Panasonic 5mp also uses a 2/3" ccd.

Does this mean that the Panasonic, despite (or because of) a lower pixel count will theoratically produce a much 'cleaner' image than the 8mp cameras above?

    thanks for any clarification.

    Hi ed9119,

Megapixel have nothing to do with a cleaner or more beautiful image. A 2mp camera can easily produce the same, if not better image as a 5mp camera on a 4R print. There are a lot of other factors that will affect the "cleaness" of the picture, like the type of lens use, the kind of environment, the in-build noise reduction, etc. etc. Most importantly, it's the user that matter, not the camera!

Anyway, do have a read of this article: The Megapixel Myth

    Happy reading!

Given that all conditions are the same (example lens, noise reduction algorithm, electronics), squeezing more pixels into a CCD could result in more noise. Of course with technology this will improve. The best is to compare the pictures taken by these cameras under the same condition.
