(: u do realise how flawed singapore's education system is right?

as far as i can tell, the ministry's priority is to "build a new batch of leaders" so as to go china and work.

our minstry has based their policies on the changes to the economy. education is education. if u gonna try tilt it for econmical benifits, u end up with stuff like this.

as far as i know. we dun have any scientists who propose scientific theories in the realm of physics taht is singaporean. our education system just doesnt allow it.

this is really a gigantic leap from

NTU student jumping from her flat --> singapore's education system sucks.

kindly take your personal agenda somewhere else, create a new thread, whatever works for you.

let's see.. yes, i have spent most of my studies in singapore.

long enough to know that a lack of scientists proposing scientific theories in the realm of physics has little to do with the quality of an education system.

and none of that has anything to do with a student suiciding.

In a way, the education system is flawed, if it keeps producing people bent on squeezing all happenings in society to fit their narrow mindsets, linking cause and effect casually and callously.

Yes, no doubt there is pressure on students, but it is not exclusive to students. I really feel that this self victimizing, whining phenomenon is because they are at the age when they are still self-centered and feels that everything revolves around and for them.

well, this has nothing to do with the ntu student, but i can't help but agree.

it is a weird sort of platter mentality - that the world is their oyster, and the world is obliged to twist and conform to their whims and temperaments. it is probably a combination of an overindulgent family, along with the bend in education these days that give schools limited power when it comes to discipline enforcement. it is most likely the former though.

everything is an injustice, everything is something to rant about. their lives are horrible, they want to end it, the canteen drinks stall auntie is not chio enough, the teacher is always scolding them, physical education class is too strenuous, the sun is too hot today.. it never ends.

it is no wonder that stomp is so popular in singapore. and it will continue to get more popular.

stuff dun revolve around students mate.

take a look back at the trends. moe changes and reviews its policies every 5 years, based on the the needs of the economies.

back then wasnt it the hype of engineering?
and then 5 years later it became bio tech?
and now 15 years already and its billingualism to push into china.

i would dare say that the ministry doesnt view education as, education, but rather the creation of workers to work for the society. everything is preplanned, ur already being directed to a certain route. now consider this: assuming ur not good at engeenering, yet the trend still pushes u towards that, do u think u have the ability to cope with the stress level? (:

nightmare, u may be strong, but that doesnt mean others are. u may feel successful, but look around. there are still thinks yet to be seen. dun be to much of a hurry to brush off other's opinions. u may feel ur mature, but ur biased (:

i was educated in your "biotech" times.. suffice to say, there were of course, naturally a few sheep that bleated with the air around them and went in blindly. still, many people filled up every other faculty.

so tell me - how bilingual are you in MOE's touted (in your view) push into china?

ah, then you are sorely mistaken.

everyone is biased, that much is true - but i don't feel strong, or successful. that is because i know my place in the world and i have seen many betters, in every single field. to those giants, i am nothing.

of course, there are things yet to be seen. no one is omnipresent, and no one has the ability to gain sufficient knowledge to know everything.

but there is a difference between acting like you know everything, when you don't; and knowing that this is the case.

someone once mentioned to me in passing, when i was going overseas, because he was a person in a position to meet many overseas students. he said:

"young man, why do so many of your age pop in here, and when i tell them that they are lucky to see more, they tell me "oh, but i've seen it all."?"

i could only shrug in response.

To clarify, I wasn't refering to the NTU student.

My heart goes out to her and her family.

The eduction system is far from perfect, but I see no sense in yet in others jumping to conclusion and casually blaming it for the suicide case, an agenda possibly carried over from another thread.

i have no intention to do so, however, my principal has pushed for a policy that a minimum a2 and above is needed for someone to take 4h2 subjects. last time still have choice. now is dun have.

u get the difference? if we had the choice at least we wont be stressed. and now stuff are being made compulsory. wad say u? (:

i wont be able to predict, unless i'm an expert economist, but i'm very confident to say the next change, which is abt in 2015, will be directed to the next big economical thing.

keep a look out. its quite interesting how moe chooses their policy.

and i do not blame that moe was the sole cause. if it was everyone would had been dead. i'll reckon a possible family issues too. oh pls. i'm not that stupid yet. =.=

just because i made a previous thread that doesnt mean i cant view things objectively. ~~

and i never claimed that i knew everything. well if i did i wont be here sharing with u what i know, facts, stats etc. yet urs is solely on personal experience. could u at least state something more concrete? like stats and stuff.

For someone to commit suicide, there could be a lot of reason at play.
Dont speculate pressure from study, it could be love (the one-sided kind), it could be mental illness, it could be crime, ... who knows.

    precisely my point.

if the origins of one's sentiments arise from genuine concern and good intentions, it will show.

if it stems from pettiness from an isolated point of view, which was already biased from the start, then there is no place in this world for that. it should not be condoned.

    translation:
    this is about me.
    this is about my needs.
this is about my need to feel heard.

in which case, here is my response:
    oh, be quiet!

Well said, this has been true some 20 years ago
where students in other institutions had thoughts
of such action due to study stress where they
were expected to perform according to the dean's
    expectation.
