Hong Kong Camera Gears Shopping Guide

Every once in a while, there will be people asking for Hong Kong camera shops’ information in ClubSNAP forum. Although there are quite a few discussion threads in the forum, the information are scattered all over the place and some of them are not up-to-date.

I have organized some of this information into topics such as DOs and DON’Ts on buying camera gears in Hong Kong, warranty matters, and where to register Hong Kong purchased products.

I have also consolidated the Hong Kong photo stores from various Internet sources and summarized them by major districts, I grouped them by districts so when people go to a certain place, they can try to find the other shops around there as well.

I hope this information will help you to have a better shopping experience in Hong Kong. Remember to take lots of photos while you are there. Hong Kong’s day time and night time street scenes are just simply amazing.

DOs and DON’Ts when buying camera gears in Hong Kong

• DO use the shops listed below as a reference but always be careful of any great offers at very low price. If the offer looks too good to be true, most of the time, it is.

• DON’T walk into any camera stores in Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay or in any tourist locations that display “TAX FREE”, “SONY”, “Canon” or “Nikon” neon signs prominently. These shops are usually “Chop” shops where the use of “bait and switch” tactics is very common. Don’t even try to go inside and look, I promise you the experience you will encounter when you try to leave without buying something will not be too good. FYI, there is no sales tax or duty in Hong Kong other than for hard liquor and tobacco.

• DO you homework before the visit. Check the Singapore street price of the items that you are planning to buy before you leave home. While in Hong Kong, do ask around for a few quotes from different shops. The shops are so close to each other there is no reason why you don’t compare price before forking out the cash. After all, you are trying to save a few from bucks buying overseas, right?

• DON’T hand over the cash or credit card before you see the actual goods. If the shop does not allow you to check the goods before paying, leave the shop and go somewhere else. If you are buying Hong Kong local sets that carry International warranty, do check the warranty card and make sure the model/serial no. matches that on the camera/lens as you will need the card and original receipt to claim warranty back in Singapore.

• DO remember to ask for official receipt on your every purchase. Make sure the model , price and date are accurately printed on the receipt.

• DON’T continue to try settling things on your own if a dispute gets ugly. You should call the local police (dial 999) for help. Hong Kong police will entertain almost anything so don’t be afraid to call them for help. Another venue to ask for help on consumer matter is the Hong Kong Consumer Council. The council will be able to help you settle most of the consumer related disputes. Their telephone no. is (852) 2856 3113. HK Consumer Council website can be found HERE. A third option will be the Hong Kong Tourism Board. They have a multilingual hotline @ (852) 2508 1234 that opens from 9am to 6pm daily. Check HERE for detail:

• DO carry your passport or travel documents with you all the time. This will help identify you as a visitor to the authority when you call them.

• DON’T wait until the last day of your stay in Hong Kong to start your shopping. Try to do this earlier so you can have ample time to test the items and if necessary go back to the shop. Always check with the shop to understand their return policy. Usually there is a seven days of 1-to-1 exchange if the product is found to be faulty.

Warranty Matters on Camera Gears

A frequent question when people purchase items from overseas:

Will I be able to claim warranty service from Singapore Canon/Nikon/Sony/Olympus/Tamron/Sigma if I bought the camera/lenses from Hong Kong?

You want to know in advance what kind of warranty service you will be getting when you bring the items home. E.g. Canon and Nikon does not provide international warranty for their DSLR camera bodies so you might as well buy parallel imported (gray) sets to save some money if you are not planning to send the camera back to the Hong Kong service centre for warranty claims. (Please refer to “Water goods”? Should I get it? Section below)

Canon Hong Kong warranty Policy
In general, Canon Hong Kong only offers international warranty for lenses and flashes. For compact cameras, Canon offers a “Half Year Tourist Warranty” to replace the local one year warranty. However, they do NOT offer international warranty nor “Half Year Tourist Warranty” to DSLR camera bodies.
For detail on the one year international warranty on lenses and flashes, please refer to clause 17.3 from the above link. For Canon compact cameras, you will need to bring your Canon Hong Kong warranty card and the purchase receipt and visit Hong Kong Canon Care Centre in person to exchange the local warranty card to a tourist warranty card. The tourist warranty’s start date will count as the purchase date. After that, you can bring the camera with tourist warranty card to Canon Singapore service centre for the six month warranty service. Please refer to clause 17.5 for detail.

Nikon Hong Kong warranty policy
In general, Nikon Hong Kong only offers international warranty for lenses and flashes. They do NOT offer international warranty for all digital cameras including both DSLR and compact cameras. Please read the link above for details.


Sony Hong Kong
does not have international warranty information on their website. However, I have communicated with them via email and was told Sony Hong Kong does provide “Tourist Limited Warranty” which applies to all overseas customers except mainland China (mainland China has a separate overseas warranty scheme). The “Tourist Limited Warranty” covers Sony compact cameras, DSLR camera bodies and lenses (but not flash). Customers will need to apply for the “Tourist Limited Warranty” in person or by mail in order to enjoy Sony warranty service outside of Hong Kong. Their Customer Service Centres are located at:

[2] 9/F Wai Fung Plaza, 664 Nathan road, Mongkok, Kowloon.

Office hour is from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Both centers open seven days a week. You can also find Sony Hong Kong contact HERE in case the above ones are outdated.

Olympus World Wide
Beginning from April 1, 2004, Olympus has launched the “new worldwide repair service warranty” which provides one-year worldwide warranty service for camera bodies and lenses. Please refer to the above link for detail.

Tamron Hong Kong
does not have international warranty information on their website. However, I have called their hotline number @ (852) 2721 7388 and was told by their staff that Tamron does offer one year international warranty in exchange for the three years local warranty. In order to receive the one year international warranty, you will have to exchange the Hong Kong warranty card for an international one at the authorized shop when you buy the lens or send the Hong Kong warranty card to Tamrom Hong Kong for the exchange of an international one. Sigma Hong Kong
also does not have international warranty information on their website. I have also called their Hong Kong office and enquired about their policy. I was told that if you buy from an authorized dealer in Hong Kong and your warranty card has been stamped by the shop, you can get the one year international warranty service provided you go to an official authorized Sigma repair centre with your stamped warranty card and official receipt from the authorized dealer in Hong Kong.

From various discussion threads in ClubSNAP forum, we know that Canon and Nikon Singapore will honor the items that carry International warranty. Please ensure you have the International warranty card and the original receipt to claim the warranty service when you visit their service center.

“Water Goods”? Should I get it?

For those items (such as DSLR camera bodies from Canon and Nikon) that do not carry international warranty, perhaps you might want to consider getting the parallel imported/gray sets or “water goods” as Hong Kong people called it since you won’t be able to enjoy the manufacturer warranty when you bring them home anyway.

Other than the lack of warranty coverage, these products are in every way the same as the ones that are officially imported by Canon Hong Kong. So quality-wise, there is absolutely no different. And since these items do not carry any warranty (some do carry shop warranty whereby the shop will honor the warranty service themselves), they usually cost less.

Where should I register my products after the purchase?

Naturally, after your purchases, you would want to register your products online with the manufacturer. E.g. after I purchased a Canon lens, where should I register online? Should it be Canon Singapore? Or, should it be Canon Hong Kong?

Well, look at your Canon international warranty card; does it say Canon Hong Kong or Canon Singapore? For products sold by Canon Hong Kong, you will have to register online with Canon Hong Kong. The registration process will go through certain verification so you know you have a genuine Canon Hong Kong product after successfully register with them.

In some rare cases, the online registration might fail. Don’t be alarm; all you need to do is to scan your warranty card and the original receipt and follow the instruction to email the manufacturer. They should get back to you within 1-2 days and you should be able to register without further problem.

To get around in Hong Kong, MTR (= MRT in Singapore) is your best friend.



Google Maps

I have found Google Maps to be very useful in locating Hong Kong streets and provide direction to the place I am looking for. All you need is to cut and paste the address into Google Maps (even if you can’t read the Chinese address). You can then print the map out for your reference later.
It will be even better if you have a mobile phone that runs applications such as mobile Google Maps.

Hong Kong Camera Shops Listed by District

Hong Kong >> Kowloon Peninsula >> Mongkok (旺角)

Mongkok MTR station is located on the Tsuen Wan line (RED) / Kwun Tong line (GREEN) between Yau Ma Tei (油麻地) and Prince Edward (太子) station.

Mongkok is likely the best place for you to get the popular camera and lenses as there are so many shops within such a short walking distance. Even Tin Cheung camera has to open a shop here as they have been missing out on the Mongkok crowd in the past with just their Tsim Sha Tsui store.

Sham Shui Po MTR station is located on the Tsuen Wan line (RED) between Cheung Sha Wan (長沙灣) and Prince Edward (太子) station.

Apliu Street (鴨寮街) is an interesting place in Hong Kong; it is famous for selling all kinds of second hand items ever since 1930. Since 1980, the place became the main distribution point of electronic spare parts. Gradually, people selling electronic parts, telecom equipment, and digital products also came here to set up shops that deals with both new and second hand products. For camera gears, the shops here mainly sell accessories. Most of the shops here sell parallel imported goods so if you are looking for local sets, be careful to check for valid warranty cards. To go to Apliu Street, get off @ Sham Shui Po MTR station and take exit A2. The whole stretch of Apliu Street is yours to explore. Final word of warning: Apliu Street is a very crowded street, watch out for your valuable belongings and be alert all the time.
