We are talking about people across our causeway and coming from a religion that is currently attacking churches nation wide simply because they refuse to allow the word "Allah" be used in any other form by other minority religions?

Fortunately Singaporean Muslims are more sensible than that, otherwise we will be seeing dozens of MacDonald outlets being razed to the ground (which might not actually be that bad) over this little fiasco if the cupic was a pig instead.

By the way I am Chinese, born in Indonesia, non Muslim.
Going to be extremely frank and straight forward here, it is precisely the fact that we are surrounded by hundreds of millions of Muslims in countries that have constantly and officially threatened us with that we have our armed forces modelled after the Israelis, it is also hardly surprising that the majority of Malays are posted to the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defense Force rather than the Singapore Armed Forces during their full-time national service.

While no religion is far from perfect (the crusades and persecution campaigns by the Roman Catholic church during the middle ages for an example) unfortunately this is the current state of the world that we live where we have a minority of Islamic extremist leaders tainting the name of the entire religion.

i felt that not many ppl in this country, let alone the world has a true understanding of religious tolerance. what they have is religious-close-one-eye. if they could ONLY understand, even a little about the other faiths...it would be muchas muchas more peaceful...

You are right, my bad. The firebomb attacks are isolated incidents in Kuala Lumpur only but there is no way of telling whether it will get out of hand or not if the Malaysian government does not keep it under control.

Racial tensions are not just isolated to any particular nation and have been known to spread across to neighbouring countries, take the 1969 racial riots in Singapore with its origin in Peninsular Malaysia for a case in point.

I would like to take the opportunity to tell people who may be deprived from learning knowledge that Guinea Pig is not a real pig (see wiki for e.g), it is a rodent like hamster and rabbit.

Don't think I am undermining anything. In my early working years, one of my Muslim colleage (local uni grad) freaked out when I told him the cute rodent he was admiring at the pet store cage is a guinea pig. He took immediate off to the mosque.

Allow me to give my two cents.

    I am Chinese.

    I am also Muslim.

So I think I can (probably??) understand better the feelings of people from both backgrounds. But please, I am by no means an authority on Chinese cultural or Islamic knowledge. Not by a long shot!

I don't think the management at McDonald's took the decision to omit the pig lightly, and I am sure they have tried their best to consult with at least the Muslims in the organisation. (I admit, I am being presumptious, though!) While I understand that the pig is a significant animal in Chinese culture, one has to remember that this is a Halal establishment afterall.

Yes, no pork is served, and the toy is afterall just made of plastic and cotton, but it somehow does not "sit right" that a Halal joint may have images of a pig in its midst. It's not so simple as to quote everything in black and white and implement a certain policy "because the paper says so". Like many Muslims who have been interviewed, I also don't mind (nor care) if they've got a pig Doraemon figure to give away with a meal. But I am also mindful of young Muslim children who may be somewhat confused when they receive a pig toy with their Halal meal. Perhaps the onus may be for the parents to educate the young? But that will still cause some controversy somehow, somewhere.

IMHO, McDonald's did the correct thing to err on the side of caution. I say so because even though I think nothing of it, I know it is merely my opinion, so therefore I am not in a position to say that it is "okay" for images of a pig to appear in a Halal-certified establisment.

However, I do think McDonald's could've done more.

IMO, an ideal compromise would be simply having more than one choice (2 Doraemon characters) at any one time. That would allieviate the issue wouldn't it? At least everyone would have an option. There'd still be images of a pig in the restaurant, but it does make it easier for people to close one eye if they're given an alternative.

(But of course, that would mean a shorter promo period which means there would be less profit to be had...)

In the grand scheme of things, although it is healthy to be mindful about such incidents, I still think this is trivial stuff and we shouldn't kick up so much fuss about it. I'm actually more concerned about the events that are unfolding in Malaysia and Melbourne. We've already attained world notoriety with Hello Kitty, so let's not get into an online riot with Doraemon, can?
I concur with what you wrote, couldn't have said it better.

A good one would be to scrap away the whole Zodiac collections if pig is not going to be included. That would not offend the Chinese or Muslim.

Replacing the pig with something else is not intelligent, much less tactful.

omg i didnt know that.. you mean just the taboo just surrounds (technically) the fluids a dog produces?
    sigh.

Which isnt consistent across the region actually.
I have Pakistani friends who have 3 dogs and share food with them as well.
    Muslim.
Ex Pakistani Musharraf had dogs as pets as well.
So am not too sure if this concern over dogs is within the Koran or is just cultural.

Anyway, my take on the whole issue of the missing pig is that Macs really messed up. Yes, their establishment caters to the muslim audience, but also to everyone else. They should have been bold enough to issue the toys without this spastic modification because tolerance means putting up with the needs of all groups, BUT it has to flow both ways.
We've become hyper sensitive, with the result that everyone is paranoid about each other, and the whole issue of race, culture and religion have become taboo.
Without addressing issues head on in a sensible and rational manner, the imaginary lines that divide will become entrenched.
Its a toy for crying out loud..

from what i gather from my muslim frens...dogs are okay. u can cuddle, hug, actually do anything u want with them. the oni part of the dog that's unclean to the muslims are the saliva and the wet nose...keep dogs as pets? why not? malaysia got police k9 units mah. all handlers are muslims oso wat.

guess the dog issue is quite a grey area here. then again i cant image interacting with a dog and trying to avoid the licks. XD

actually i feel no one actually really gives a hoot about the toys. lolx
    sigh.
