The other side of the grey card is pure white, i believe SS means that side rather then the "grey side"

    cheers.

wouldn't it be better if the bounce card inclines up to 45degrees over the flash output itself? or unnecessary altogether?

i tried taking some indoor pictures with a stofen bounce at 45 degrees but the photos were underexposed....sigh. (it was actually a church wedding) How near must i be to the couple? or how should i tilt the flash head to get the best result? please advise. thanks.

How near you are gotta depend on your flash guide no., the aperture used and ISO used.
IMHO, a safe guide would be to keep it to from 3-6m with iso800 5.6 for a sb80 equilivent flash(for those technicals guru you can calculate the exact distance from your guide no. and f stop)
also in my view, no point tilting 45, cause after the omibounce the light tat goes up will not be coming down anywhere. jus shoot direct.

ps: tat my personal opinion, and i dun use omibounce often, still use jus a bounce card in church.

Omnibounce reduces the light power, so you need to compensate by increasing your power output. Increasing power uses up more battery, so battery life span decreases.

I prefer bounce as well... more directional control. Typically the tiny built-in bounce card on the SB800 is already good for me but for group shots, I use an (hot) laminated white A5 and velcro-ed on my flash. The lamination gives it a certain curve as well...

i bought a sheet of white pvc (about b4 size) from artfriend for about $3.50 if i recall. can cut up to make 2-4 bounce cards depending on size. i'll take a photo of it tonight and post if i remember.

Now I just fire the flash direct for fill in, unless I'm using a hammerhead..

You can either use your flash as main source of light, or as fill-in

FOr main source of light, it means that your flash will expose your subject correctly while the background is underexposed.

For fill-in, it means that the flash is simply used to eliminate shadows resulting from ambient lighting. (that's why you see people using flash is broad daylight..)

so is there such a thing as using fill-in for indoor shoot or is it always being use during outdoor shoot?

on the other hand.. i've came across some of my fren's wedding photos.. it appears that the background isn't well lit.. am i right to say it's gotta do with the metering instead of the flash adjustment? how do u recitify this issue in order to have a well-balanced lit photo?

    appreciate ur comments..

As long as the ambient light is the main source of light, your flash is the fill in

With the omnibounce you're supposed to tilt it. Anyway, how about adding the Lightsphere to the list? :\

Hope I will not be deviating too much from the topic..But I have question also about FILL-IN
flash... I tried to set my flash on while taking picture under a midday sun to fill-in the shadows. But I noticed that my shutter speed was set to max of 1/200 sec (eos350d), & thus I was forced to compensate with the aperture to avoid overexposure..

Is this a limitation or has some logical technical explanation?

Not sure if i am answering your question correctly not, but with flash attached, there is a max sync speed, My D70s only supports flash sync speed of up to 1/500s also.

Some dlsr can set to FP (Focal Plane) or high-speed sync but my D70s cannot, yours i not sure can or not,

i read in another site about a way to overcome this manaully but i hv nt tried :
    http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-...xx&unified_p=1

The reason for this (I read from a book) being the shutter will already be closing when the flash fires (if shutter speed is set higher then the max sync speed) causing a section of the photo to be totally black.

Hope my explanation is not wrong.. please correct me if i am wrong.. thanks...

Hi heroneo99, thanks so much for your time to answer my question..

The explanation sounds logical... if the flash will force the shutter to close then maybe I can possibly adjust to larger a aperture even though my max shutter is only at 1/200sec... maybe i would just need to set my flash to a negative exposure so as to avoid overexposure.
Anyway, I will try & experiment again...
(not sure though if what im trying to do makes sense... & still need to read & review the attached site you sent)

    thanks again...
