I suggest too that you buy whatever best suits your available budget so that you don't regret and remake this decision too early. It's perfectly valid and reasonable to say "stick to the most modest equipment when you are starting out", but hey, "starting out" has nothing to do with "seriousness" or "willing to take on a whole new path".
Buying Canon or Nikon does not matter. High end models compete similarly.
Again, this is fake: "Note that Canon FF body only can accept L lense".

EF lenses are not all L's.

I would go FF 5D / 5DMk2 for your needs.
    Yeah, 5D MK2 cannot accept EF-S lens.
Canon L Lens are Canon's professional line of lens.

yeah. go for the 7D. if you can work with just the PASM modes, then it's suitable.

If you can afford it, why not? Nothing is stopping you. Asking us for validation will only get you more confused.

if u can afford it, go for it. 7d is a great cam. main thing i found when i upgraded from a prosumer to a dslr is that it's a lot heavier and 7d is not a light camera.

I wanted a Canon EOS 500D to start with too .. then my hubby surprised me with a 7D a few days ago for Christmas.

I have been using a PnS camera all along .. my Canon G3 .. so the 7D is a real big jump for me. Now trying to read up all I can .. so that I don't just end up just using the "auto" mode all the time. hahah! ..

If u can afford the 7D, then u might as well just go for it. I am really happy with mine

i think 15-85mm would be the best lens to start too.

the only con i can think of would be the weight ...

    go for it ...

    am also a noob, i have 50D.

I know it is definitely way beyond an entry-level camera, but if i know i'm going to do take this seriously, why not get a better one which will keep me satisfied longer before i progress further. Rather than getting an entry-level one and switch to a EOS 7D level camera later, which i know i eventually will.

Please share your comments and advices. Merry Xmas folks.
Like what the others say, if you can afford it AND it feels right in your hands, then go for it. Part of the fun is in the learning of controls.

    Hey all.
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I think i'll continue to brush up my skills and read up more about 7D before heading into it. Really appreciate it. Btw any fast prime lens 50mm you people recommend? Third party, hopefully, because it's cheapeR?

The "must get" lens imo for a beginner is the Canon 50mm F1.8 - It cost just over a hundred dollars and @ F1.8 is really fast. If you find yourself comfortable with shooting at 50mm, you can always resell it for $20 less and get the Canon 50mm F1.4 USM

then again, the same argument applies.. if you can afford the 1.4 version, why bother with the 1.8?
Photography is about seeing without a camera.

    ZerocoolAstra,

lol. My birthday is also our wedding anniversary and it's right after Christmas on the 27th, so it's a COMBINED gift .. lol! ..

My hubby doesn't like to take pictures so it's just for me to use. He had a tough time deciding between the 7D and the 500D cos he knows ZERO about cameras (same as me) .. but he wanted me to have a camera that I can use for a long time to come ..

ya, it has an "auto" mode. THANK GOD. lol !

    ianhyk,

I know nothing about lens - and my hubby got me the 7D - just the body only. We looked around and bought a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM second hand.

    Is that ok u think?

That's one of the most versatile zoom lens around that comes with very decent IQ. Good choice.

What are you planning to shoot?

The problem is that 17-85 is rather expensive, and not very fast.
For that money, the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 seems more appealing to me.
I think the new VC version is more expensive though
