hey hi,
i know that A80 price are about $650, i ever saw a ad at cnet.com (A tourist posted there cliam to buy this cam at $615 @ far east plaza - not sure its true). I am in ns now, so kind of budget you see. BUT i am very sure to get this cam in about 1-2mths time when i get my ns pay :P. Thats why i wonder, if they price will drop soon? I only have about $650 plus to spend on the cam, hopefully can get free CF card as well (on top of the 32mb, comes with the cam). Another qns i would like to ask about is : what kind of lens can i get to fit to this cam? i was very amazed to know that such a small cam can actually transform to FIT lens. Well, basically i am a novice about photography and very very determine to learn photography. So i am wondering how much does a lens, adaptor cost if i want to buy after getting the cam. And what kind of lens can i get? isit any lens that fit those SLR model's cam?? quite blurr on this. Hope fellow clubsnappers here can enlighten me with your experience having this cam :P 10q Last edited by Souphamster; 18th February 2004 at 09:49 PM. |

Lens wise, you won't be using those SLR lenses. They are NOT FIT. A80 only uses a lens adapter (cost around $39 for original) to mount simple converters to change it's "focal length (so call lah...not exactly)". As whether you need a Tele or Wide. It's up to your. A80 with an original adapter can fit 52mm lens converters. But beware of the multiplier that different brand claim to give. Some claim to have 2x or 2.somthing doesn't really produce that much. You can test the lenses without a camera. Just place it in front of your eyes and move away. "AKA" guess the different. It will appear similar effect on your cam. |

Hey guys,
come across march there will be a IT SHOW http://www.itshow.com.sg/ Do you think its advisable to go and buy during the canon roadshow on march? or do you think the price line between shops (alan, Cathay, bargain.com) will mark down as well for that period? |

tele is adding magnification but at the cost of reducing the angle of view wide is reducing magnification and at the same time increasing the angle of view |

does it mean if i get the lens for A80, it will be similar like SLR lens? and it is just a junior version that i can play around with lens like SLR? Does it make the photos more sharp compare to SLR len? $139 plus for a lens i suppose its cheap rite? |

The so-called 'lens' for the A80 does not function like an SLR lens. It's more like an 'adapter' lens which converts the focal length of your lens to either an even wider or compressed (tele/zoomed-in) perspective. This could be useful if for eg, you can't fit everything in and need a wider view or if you want to zoom-in to something far away and the A80's lens can't quite do it by itself. So you add such additional lenses to achieve your purpose. I don't like using such lenses because of personal reasons. Size is one thing and I find it limited in usage. For example, if you want to use the tele-lens, you got to zoom in your A80 first to the max and stick around there. If you zoom-out, you're going to see a black circle (called 'vignetting' in photography jargon) and it's just awful. For the 'wide-lens' there is too much distortion for me and again, like the tele, its usage is limited. So you can't play around with the add-on 'lens' for the A80 like an SLR one. Digital cameras don't last long in the market. I dare say give another 6 more months or even less, you will see another newer model appearing. That's the way it is... but you can't wait forever to get the best. Another advice is, don't forget to add another $200 more to your budget and consider getting a higher capacity CF card, battery charger, extra batteries and maybe a CF card reader. |

hi soup hamster, why not consider getting a used G3?
It is much better for the same price.... somemore, when u start learning more abt camera, u won't have to upgrade so soon becoz the g3 has many many features which will keep u bz for a long time... i started off with a s45, sold it within 2 weeks coz i wanted to get a g3, which lasted me quite a while... g3 is better coz u can also attach external flash which is important once u start getting better with camera... |

digital g3.
i dare say it has almost all the features of a full fledge DSLR, all kinds of metering, custom white balance, 1st curtain 2nd curtain flash, daylight synchro, can use external flash, flash exposure compensation, manual flash output power control, ETTL flash support, AV TV M modes, shutter up to 30secs/1/2000s etcetc... only place where SLR wins is u can change lens/lens quality/af speed/brightness/zoom range/field of view/less noise in fact it has even more manual functions than the digital rebel 300d... not to mention u can get wide/tele lens, macro lens.... osso, if u are into macro shots, there is a special method to get SUPER good macro w/o even using any added accessories/filter... this secret method allows u to get infinite closeness to the object right up to x = 0cm (where x = distance of lense to object)... u can even use it to focus on the DUST on the lens itself... imho, this makes g3 macro shot even better than the famous olympus/nikon MACRO cameras once u learn how to use every function, u can step up to dslr liao... and that will take u QUITE a long long while.... go straight for a used g3 / g5... dun bother with the a80 is my advice... search the forums, got pple selling g3 2nd hand for 650 liao... oh yes, tip for u, first learn up whats the point of changing SHUTTER SPEED/APERTURE (ie, learn up whats the point of Av, Tv, and M modes on the camera). And learn up how SHutter and Aperture combine to give a good exposure...
check out some of the shots i took with my g5 (almost same as g3, in fact g3 got better pic quality) abt a year ago: http://www.pbase.com/jpow2/morning_esplanade some of these were taken with polarizer, and cokin filters. some were also adjusted in photoshop.. here are some with macro shots (taken w/o macro filter using the special method): http://sprockett.hypermart.net/Espla...808/index2.htm i had my camera for a few months liao... but i felt i max out its abilities, so i sold, now i am saving up for NIKON d70... best of luck... lens adaptor refers to a small plastic cylinder u screw onto ur g3... only with that can u screw on wide lens, filters etc....
most of my shots use no extra accessories. only the landscape shot i put on the wide angle convertor... composition not good still, coz im still learning... but u get better after awhile |
