We have a priceguides section for a good reason. Look there.

wah... you wish to be spoonfed with information???
    cannot like that la...
You know how many lenses from Nikkor alone (not to mention 3rd party manufacturers) satisfy your requirement of "telephoto lens" ??

What you should be doing is searching for lenses online, forming a shortlist (based on the focal length, etc), getting the prices for each lens first... before asking for a recommendation.
    Exploring! :)

Nope. the 50/1.8 is AFD with screw drive AF only.

The legendary lenses for portraiture work are:
    50/1.4, 85/1.4, 105/2 DC, 135/2 DC

The cheaper alternatives for portraiture work:
    50/1.8, 85/1.8

Unfortunately of all these lenses, only the 50/1.4 has a AFS version, and it is a few hundred more expensive than the 50/1.4 AFD version with similar optics.

You can learn to focus manually. Installing a focusing screen may help heaps.

Focusing screens can be bought at OP. Ask them for it.

I had one installed into my D40x some time back. $60 includes installation.

    AF-S 50mm f/1.4
    $780 (CP, Jan09 - Randius)

according to the price guide. But this price is jan 09, before the price hike. Should be around 20% more nowadays.

    Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 SL II.

$580 if you buy brand new.

    Manual focus only.

For the price, it beats even the 50mm f/1.4 AFS for sharpness and IQ.

EDIT: and you don't really need a focusing screen to focus manually. I had one on my D200 and regretted it (it makes your viewfinder less bright). I ended up still relying on the green AF confirmation dot anyways.

    When was that ever legendary?

And you're missing out on the 105mm f/2.5 AiS.

Of course, this short list is only limited to Nikon lenses.

in the second post in this thread I already replied to you and said you can look in the priceguide. Please read, and don't expect spoonfeeding. Show some initiative.

but seriously how long have you used your current lens ? (the original kit lens, i assume?) Use it and know where you are happy and where you feel frustrated using it.......... from there (give yourself 2-3 months play time) you have a better idea what you really need

But seriously. What good is it consolidating the priceguide threads if then we can't point people in that direction?

On a DX format body it works well. Ok, maybe the word legendary is too heavy. Popular is the better word.

And I did not mention any AiS lenses. The dude is already complaining about MF. Ask him to do ME as well... die...
