Default 70-200L 2.8 help

Been reading the instruction sheet of the 70-200L 2.8 usm but couldn't understand the following:

Quote:
"MANUAL FOCUS
With this lens, even if the focus mode switch is set on AF, it is possible to focus with the manual focusing ring. Set the camera on ONE SHOT autofocus. After focusing, keep the shutter button pressed halfway while adjusting the focus by turning the manual focusing ring" unquote

its simply saying that the lens has FTM capability.
the part about using "one-shot" mode in the body is just to give a worked example

simply means when you focus on an auntie already then suddenly one chio lady jogs across, you can use the focus ring to focus on the jogger and snap!

A property of your ring type USM

One shot mode so that it doesn't pop into servo and track moving objectz while AF-ing

Does it mean while in AF mode, I have to half press the shutter for the focus ring to work?
Juz tried my EF 50mm 1.8, also can manual focus in AF mode.

still

alternatively, play around with your 10D's CFn 04 and use the AEL button for AF-Stop instead.

For FTM lens, set CF4 to 1, then the lens will not refocus when you press shuttle button.

You can now manual focus anytime, if you want to use auto focus, press the partial meter button.

it is highly NOT recommended to turn for manual focus for your 50/1.8. the MM autofocus drive system will create problems by generating reverse DC into your camera...

you can ONLY do the FT-M thing on canon USM lenses in Single Shot mode - even then, the AF has to come to a stop first.

hmmm..... the manual focus ring is there so that in any case you need to suddenly change focus point while AF-ing, you can just turn the ring.

When you never half press, you can use the ring to focus, but then after you focus, you half press, it will AF again depending on the tracking (This is true if you have not set any custom function)

Thus it is said that the focus ring can 'override' your AF at anytime.

no no no, your 1.8 does not have a ring USM motor. You can turn the focus ring while in AF but you will be dragging the gears with it (Didn't you notice the resistance? You don't get that on your 70-200 right?) And thus with time you'll screw things up internally.

Tsk tsk...NEVER try to rotate the lens' focusing ring in AF mode unless it's a USM lens with Full Time Manual (FTM) focusing.

You are forcing the gears and motors in the lens if you try to do that. Always switch to MF mode before doing manual focusing on non FTM lenses.
