I started out with Canon 1000D. The 1000D has a larger sensor than than the Olympus e450. In terms of image quality the e-450 is similiar to the 1000D when compared in the ISO100-400 range. However, without flash the 1000D performs better than the e-450 in lowlight environment at ISO800 and above. Canon have IS built into their lenses that needs IS the most.

    Hello...welcome.

If it's between these 2 models, I'll go for the Olympus as I find lenses with IS is more expensive and with in body IS any lens that I mount on the body will enjoy this feature which is important to me.

However, I would suggest that you check out what Nikon, Sony (previously Konica Minolta) and Pentax has to offer as well.

if only given this 2 choices, i would go Canon...

why? because Olympus said the future is mirrorless... i don't want them to issue a service notice to take out my mirror...

I think the lens selection is not as important here. What's important is if the system has the lenses you need and want.

Who cares if a particular system has lots of lenses. You are not going to buy all.

i would go Oly because its a firm that spends less on marketing and more on R&D ...... more bang for your buck in both new and 2nd hand markets ........also its color output is great as well

but if you want the safety of a bandwagon , then go Canon .... or Nikon

    Definitely. People just don't see..

For the Oly, the 14-42mm and 40-150mm kit lenses will be enough for most applications. They are one of the sharpest kit lenses around too.

The only lacking one is cheap prime lenses.

Actually Sony, Pentax and Olympus are more value for money and all these brands have lenses that can cover the normal usage range of 24/28-200mm (in FF terms).

    Just an aside.......

Up until 2 months back I had a 5 year old Oly SW-8080 which has image sensor that most of today's top-line compacts still lack ........... was one of the very first cams that had built in video too then.

If you MUST get the 1000D........ get it 2nd hand and decide later once you mature and/or decide on your next step in photography.

Haha. But Olympus's compacts are bad now, in terms of image quality. But I don't mind having an indestructible compact though.

great choice, why do you need wide lens selection when 4 lens can cover 95% of your needs? Haha.
    I am talking about 7-14 F4, 14-35 F2, 35-100 F2, 90-250 F2.8. Cream of the crop.

THey may be zooms, but their quality is close to primes.
