    Default Embassy car in hit-and-run

    http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking...ry_467195.html

A CAR believed to be from a foreign embassy was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Bukit Panjang Road early on Tuesday, hitting three people at two different traffic junctions.

Police said that the car first hit two pedestrians who were crossing the junction of Bukit Panjang Road and Bangkit Road at about 3am.

Mr Tong Kok Wai, 30, and Mr Bong Hwee Haw, 24, suffered head injuries and were taken to the National University Hospital (NUH). Mr Tong is in the intensive care unit while Mr Bong is in a surgical high dependency ward.

Instead of stopping, the car continued on its path of destruction. Witnesses said it beat another red light 100m ahead at the cross-junction of Bukit Panjang Road and Pending Road.

There, it hit another pedestrian, Mr Muhamad Haris Abu Talib, 18, before speeding off.

Mr Haris was also taken to NUH with leg pain.

I doubt the driver will escape from punishment. He was driving recklessly.

Lotsa irresponsible people around nowadays. Just because driver belongs to embassy, then can get out of the law?

Conscience will continue to haunt him/her for life.

If drunk enough, might not even remember the whole incident(s).

Now that's the worst. No memory, no guilt.

Unfortunately with diplomatic immunity the driver might not even be arrested under international law.

Doubt there's much that can be done. Unless someone dies or the media makes it loud, probably will be hush hushed.

On a separate account, I'd ever caught a bunch of VIP kids shop lifting. Called police and brought to Tanglin Police station and after clarifying the kids' identities, was told it is advised to just let them go.

I think at least they should compensate the victims for the hospitalisation fees and permanent disability. If that is not possible, then something is terribly wrong here.

    Haiz...

Well, just to clarify, the blindfolded lady represents the Roman goddess Justitia, or Lady Justice, not Themis per se.

And the reason why she is blindfolded is to represent the ideal that justice should be dished out objectively and fairly; whether the offender is rich or poor, powerful or invisible. No favours to be given, and no fear of reprisal.

(And please no insinuation of the above interpretation to whatever event; it is an IDEAL; human failings always get the way of ideals).

Some stuff I found from Wiki ...

"The deputy ambassador of the Republic of Georgia to the United States, Gueorgui Makharadze, caused an accident in January 1997 that injured four people and killed a sixteen-year-old girl. He was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.15[clarification needed : which units?], but was released from custody because he was a diplomat. The U.S. government asked the Georgian government to waive his immunity, which they did and Makharadze was tried and convicted of manslaughter by the U.S. and sentenced to seven to twenty-one years in prison. However after serving 3 years of his sentence, he was returned to his home country where he spent 2 more years in jail before being paroled"....
