Default New Canon 300D user!!

Hi guys! I just got my new 300D kit over the weekend together with a 512MB Sandisk Ultra II.

I am looking for a general purpose/walkabout lens more for bright outdoor use. I am also looking for a indoor small zoom lens, preferably 28-70/80 F2.8. Any recommendations? Is there any lense that suits both areas of usage?

I am buying a NOVA 3 AW. I think it should fit a 300D body + kit + 50mm F1.8 + mid range zoom + extra batteries + flash unit + battery grip right? Hehehe.

Thanks for all the comments! Happy shooting to all!

Hi Kelvin,

Congrats on your new purchase.

The best way to test a bag is to bring everything down to the shop and test it there. Get a bag that is slightly bigger than what you need in case of any more equipment purchase.

I used to own a S&F 300 (which is similar in size to Nova 3), I reckon it will be enough for your gear at the moment.

Yup, totally agree with Binbeto. It would be better if you can bring everything down and test it. Assuming that you are not getting the L lens (17-40 or the 70-200 in the near future that is ). Other than that this bag should be fine. Take a look at the Nova 4 as well.

Happy shopping and congrats on your new purchase

Better u get the Nova 4/5. If you budget is higher get the reporter 500/600.

28-70L with the hood takes up lots of space

This would be my recommendation too. Also consider the Tokina 287 28-70 Pro SV f2.8 for a low budget option.

For slightly longer range, consider the Sigma 70-300 Mk2 which is quite nicely priced. If you have the budget a Canon 70-200 f2.8 L or a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX might be the thing for you.

Hi guys! Thanks for all the help. Actually I only have just the kit lens and the body now. What I listed there are mainly what I foresee myself buying in the near future. So I guess a NOVA AW 3 is enuff ya?

I just checked out at mscolor and they quoted me $660 for both tamron 28-75 f2.8 XR di and the Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO 28-80mm f2.8. Did not see Tokina 287 28-70 Pro SV f2.8 there. Will try to enquire the price soon. How is the lens quality for these lens? As you can see I am trying to get these lenses cos I wanna use them for indoor stuff. Appreciate your help.

Oh ya, for the flash...as we all know 300D does not have FEC and the only 2 compatitble flashes that have FEC on the hardware is 550EX and Sigma 500 DG Super. My question is...is the sigma flash fully compatible with 300D?? (E-TTL?). What are the differences between both flashes except that Sigma is almost half as cheap?

nova 3 not enuff if u intend to get a 70/80 -200mm But then you can always add on a side lens bag. By that time you would probably be complaining about the weight on one shoulder and soon switch to a backpack. hehe.......

There's quite some differences with the 550EX and 500 super DG. Do a search in the forum and youll get the answers. Oh yes, there's always the metz too. hehe.......

You may want to get a bigger bag e.g. Stealth 300/400 AW so that you don't have to keep upgrading your bag when you start building your system.

I got myself a Specialist 85 AW for my 3 lens + 1 flash + 1 SLR body system and there's plenty of room for more for things like my Palm PDA, umbrella, film, water bottle, windbreaker, etc. etc...

IMHO, the Stealth Reporter 100 AW may be a tinny-winny bit too small--probably just enough to store your body, one lens and one flash/another lens. Don't forget your extra batteries, chargers, X-drive, blower, etc, etc...

Lens-wise, I've got a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM as my walkabout lens. A little heavy but with the battery grip, I think the camera balances out quite nicely.

Bag-wise, I'm using a Stealth Reporter 300. Fits everything that I have (EOS 300D, 18-55mm kit lens, 28-135mm lens, polarizing filter, wired remote control, 5 BP-511 batteries (two loaded in the battery grip, 5 CF cards) quite nicely.

Regards.

Hmmm...Stealth 300 Reporter AW but do you still have space for more lenses or external flashes?

there is no perfect bag to suit for all gears

why not consider to get a smaller bag now and bigger bag later when you have more gears ...

meaning you have to get 2 bags for 2 purposes
- smaller bag ( contain light gears )
- bigger bag ( contain heavy gears )

for me , I have a reporter 200 for light gears and microtrekker 200/minitrekker for heavy gears ..

Just to share how much I can put into my Stealth Reporter 200AW, here are the items.

(1) DSLR body with grip
(2) 70-200mm f/2.8
(3) 35mm
(4) 50mm
(5) 1 WA or mid-tele
(6) 1 flash
(7) blower, lenspen, polarisers, filter lenses, bounce card and pen/paper
(8) spare batteries (at least 4 sets of AA, 2 sets of Li-ions)

(9) Handphone (external pouch)
(10) water bottle (external pouch)
(11) 2 more external pouches for other accessories or small/mid-sized lenses
