Pai seh. I realise that I did not put it exactly the way I wanted.

But why you don't eat enough? Not very healthy, you know.

I see some hypocrites here, and this includes the people/person who made that decision to call the police. I doubt that anybody who have posted something up here can claim that they have not done anything that has broken the law. I can think of so many, some that includes sexual acts, even if they are done in a consenting manner.

I agree fully that it's the parents' fault....but then, they have only the father. The young couple divorced already.....anyway...the eldest was born slightly after marriage some more.....poor kids...really really poor kids.

The more you control, the more the students will retaliate..
Whatever you do with your kids at home, nobody is going to care, but as far as I know, the school did the right thing (apart from the starving of the students).

Firstly, it is illegal to distribute porn in Singapore, whether you like it or not.

Secondly, it is illegal for a minor to view porn.

Those kids commited more than one offence. Therefore I would say the principal and teachers are even more stupid if they found out about it and still do nothing about it. The MHA guys would probably question the MOE guys: "hey, why your ministry people don't know the law arh?"

Well...I feel that the physical act of kids watching porn is not the main issue here...its the fear that they lack the ability to discern between fact (real life) and fiction (can you believe the things they do in those porn movies...ppl can sprain their backs with those positions... )...the key thing is education...like almost everyone mentioned above...kids these days are definitely more exposed to human sexuality compared to their parent's time...as parents...well...they hvta realise that kids are so much more smarter than we usually gave them credit for...I'm personally not a parent myself...but I definitely know that being one is not a joking matter...not only do you hvta work hard at your occupations to bring home the bacon...you'll also hvta educate your children about life...heh...communications is the way...but then again...saying all these is definitely easier then carrying it out...

    Anyhoo...just my 2cents....heh

Agree. But I don't think it's a right thing to do to start "educating" them only when they're caught red-handed. Put yourself in the principal/teacher's shoes and think whether it's stupid to punish them.

If they punish, the public criticises.

If they don't punish, other students go back tell their parents, their parents complain to MOE and write to the press, the public still criticises.

My opinion: Educators are always being attacked, whether they do the right thing or the wrong thing. "Parents and the public are always right."

    Default To punish or not.......

(Just my opinion) I feel that the boys should be punished accoring to their involvement in the whole affair. I suspect that the school was worried about the possibility of a syndicate of illegal porn VCD distributors in the school.

However, there could have been a better way to handle the situation instead of going straight to the Police. What i am refering to is the extend the boys are involved and from the Press release it seems to be a bunch of friends swapping these VCDs around.

i say, the educators could have talk to the parents instead, period, rather than resort to calling the police.

there is a possible criminal record once you call in the police, imagine the kids who kenna caught? how they will feel. Its most embrassing when the whole school and your parents know that you are caught with porn, and if there is a criminal record to boot, i really feel its not going to help the students alot.

you have to weigh your actions on the outcome, following the book will not help sometimes.

Sori, but i thought this thread is about porn and KIDS. I do not accept the view that porn for kids is good for any society. But adult, that's a difference discussion.
How old were these "kids"? its sec 2 class. in today's society we attribute them as minors. however in many societies elsewhere, they would be considered adults.

evolution also recognises this.. otherwise we would be undergoing puberty at age 18....

besides, the sheer hypocrisy of the law is quite infuriating.
    eg:
age 14: can have sex , above age limit for statuary rape but it will still be a violation of section 7 of CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS ACT
    age 16: can have sex
age 18 and below: can marry with approval (eg: unplanned pregnancy)
    age 18: can marry
age 18: can die for country (some at age 16 if they go in early)
    age 21: can watch RA
age 50: still not legal to possess porn.

lets not forget a girl of 14 years can get an abortion w/o letting her parents know. Wait, wait, if it's illegal for her to have sex, how does it make it "legal" for her to have an abortion?

maybe it's as they claim - they wanna offer young girls "a way out" instead of them going to untrained abortionist and harm their bodies. Then why the advertisment tagline "prevention is better then cure"?"

As you said, a kid. Who is not really legally responsible for their acts, right? Furthermore, there is no harming of another nor depriving another party, unlike kill or steal.

I'm quite surprised there that people consider the contents as porn or not porn. Sorry, there is a wide spectrum from erotica (like what Steven Chia did) to soft porn and hard porn. Most here responded just like what the education system teach them. There is something called erotica that is not porn you know...

    Lightbulb To poll starter....

Options available are restrictive. As a parent, I may use a combination of options, including those not included here.

Jailable does not mean serious. Oral sex between consenting adults is jailable. Does it mean oral sex is bad even between married people ?

If he steals or kills, a kid will still get a second chance. The law recognises this and does not allow him to be charged as an adult if he's only a kid ( ie, under 18 ).

Lightbulb Hot burning stuff in males....

Males, we all had been through these phases of our life. Looking back, the real culprit must be the 'hot burning stuff' in males, especially those in sec 2, 3 or 4. There is no place for 'punishment' today. What is needed is some counselling. Police need not be involved, but unfortunately, they are. But the police will come to their senses, the boys will probably get away with a warning. No more. There is no need for 'criminal records' for them. They are minors. Do not blame the parents. It has nothing to do with the parents. Boys are boys. It is part of growing up. But they must not be allowed to go scot-free. A proper counselling about what is right or wrong will do.
