    Exam --> sexam

    Explain --> sexplain
    Expert --> sexpert

    It is a S. Also, you used the wrong article, it is "a" not "an". "An" must be followed by a vowel.

    "An S" is correct, not "A S" when describing a letter that sounds like a vowel (S = es), you treat it as a vowel when choosing between "a" or "an" to remove the glottal stop. Same with "x" "h" (when silent), you don't say "A hour", you say "An hour", for example.

    Know what's right before correcting others.

    Words that begin with "H" don't always work that way, either.

    "An historical reference..." is just as correct as "A historical reference...".
