What type of zoom... wide, standard or tele zoom?
The kit lens that is going to be packaged with the D70 is suppose to be the new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED. That should cover most of your needs... might want to consider a short tele like the 105mm f/2.8D Micro-Nikkor to go with that instead. |

From what I know, the earlier release will not be the lens+body kit. If you are going to buy a D70 upon its release, I will recommend buying a AF 50/1.8 as a starter lens (cost about S$180 new). It is a prime (fixed focal) lens no doubt but I feel it should help quite a bit in your learning process. It can also act as a low-light lens even when you decide to buy a standard zoom later.
As for telephoto, you can settle for an AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6G, it can be had for < $200 and is a good, economical lens to start off with if you are not too particular about image quality. In this way, you can than opt to settle for the 18-70 when it is in stock and not waste any earlier purchases since all three lenses can complement each other quite sufficiently under usual circumstances. ![]() |

Considering your budget, the best option if you stick to Nikkor lenses might be the AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED. This will give you an "effective" 42-300mm zoom because of the sensor size (crop factor).

I would suggest you to wait for the 18-70 DX lens that come with it.
If you really can't wait, a 28-105/3.5-4.5 is one of the better lens nikon produce at a new price of abt $600.

IMO, you have to be patient and very careful in selecting your lens for whatever purpose you intends to shoot later on.
D70 is not even released in Singapore yet and there are ambient time for you to consider during this periods. So my advise is do your homework now to see which lens suit your requirement, the best is wait for the D70 + the lens kit AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED which should be around $2k or lesser. Later you can upgrade to higher range or choose to buy another zoom telephoto. Be patient and you will not live to regret later on should you purchase the wrong combinations for your needs. |

Hi Beach Boy, from reading your queries, you do not seem to actually know what you really wants to take with your new D70 when it comes. My advise is as Avatar has spoken, first get a 50 f/1.8 lens which is cheap and really good due to the f/1.8 that this lens is... explore further with your camera till you can decide what you really wants then go for the lens that suits you. Here are some of the good lens that is good for specific kind of shoot with good working distance for the 1.5 crop factor:
Good Travel Lens: 28-200 f/3.5-5.6 Good Events Shoot Lens: 24-120VR f/3.5-5.6 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 Good Portraits Lens (nice Bokeh): 50mm f/1.8 85mm f/1.8 105mm DC f/2.0 (Defocus Lens) 180mm f/2.8 80-200 or 70-200 f/2.8 AFS/AFD versions (PRO) Good Zoom Lens for birds shoot: 80-200 or 70-200 f/2.8 AFS/AFD versions (PRO) 300 f/2.8 or 300 f/4 (PRO) 200-400VR f/4 (PRO) Good Wide Lens 12-24 f/4 (PRO) 20mm f/2.8 17-55mm f/2.8 10.5 Fish Eye f/2.8 Those with a (PRO) marked is regconised as a Pro lenses that gives profressional picture quality output thus the prices is on the high side. Should you need more info, can PM me directly. |

Beachboy, like all previous fellow CSers had said, if you are not getting the "kit lense", get the Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D lense, it's a cheap and very good lense to start with, learn your basics like composition and framing, and also use your legs as the "zoom". From there, then you decide what other lense you need and the style of photography you like.
