Thread: Tripods: Lever-lock vs Twist-lock

    Default Tripods: Lever-lock vs Twist-lock

As above, which one is better in terms of:
    1) durability (that will last a long time & won't give way)
    2) stability
    3) speed (deployment & keeping)

So which one are you using now? And which one do you recommend?

btw I have change from Manfrotto 190Xprob to Vanguard Alta Pro 283CT(Twist Lock) then Gitzo Explorer. I also have Benro Monopod (Twist Lock)

deploy speed, I find that there isnt much different. if compare Gitzo (G-Lock) and Manfrotto.
if compare Benro and manfrotto, maybe manfrotto is faster mainly becuz benro need more twist to secure it.

stability, very much depend on what brand you are comparing with, Gitzo, no problem, my Benro Monopod always give get loose even I though I already tighten it. Level lock.. rest assure is lock.

Durability? I cant tell, but feel like level is more long lasting.

To me, this is quite a personal thing. I started off with flip-lock and moved on to twist-lock ever since owning a 2nd tripod. It's faster (subjective, I know...) to me and the tripod design for twist-locks has always been somewhat less bulky, at the joints especially.

I am happy with my Velbon Neo Carmagne 640(A). Good luck...

The Gitzo twist lock only requires one quarter twist to release and lock so if you know how to operate them, it should be faster than the flip locks.

have both, initially thought twist lock is more troublesome, but start to love it when the shop owner taught me how to deploy it faster.

    1) durability (that will last a long time & won't give way) No brainer, by engineering design, Twist Lock

    2) stability Twist Lock as quoted from Dennis Kee's article

    3) speed (deployment & keeping) Lever, or Twist, if your collars are designed with a rougher pitch/you know of some secret technique

All my heavy duty tripods (up to max load of 44 lbs) have some kind of twist lock design.

    Thanks all for the info.
Seems like I have something in mind now.
So will go down to shop to test the various tripods.
I am thinking of getting Sirui at TK.

don't know about 1 or 2, cos never really use twist lock before

3 is preference, but i prefer lever, because if i forget to lock at least it is obvious
