    Hello...welcome.

$1k is not a small budget for a DSLR. A brand new Sony A230 which has the full feature of a higher end DSLR and comes with build in stabiliser is only $600+ from the shops and the remaining $ you can use for the extended warranty which also comes with a free 50mm f1.8 lens which is great for portraits and low light situations.

    Warm welcome to CS

the mainstream choices are nikon d5000 or canon 1000D or the older 450D.
you may also want to check out pentax and sony.

any one of these cameras should be fine. just get a model you like and start shooting some amazing stuff!
Photography is about seeing without a camera.

between the A230 and the A330, I would recommend the A330 instead. The live View can be pretty useful and it's good for new users upgrading from a compact camera to DSLRs.

Yes, we have a consumers corner and a priceguide thread. If you search "recommended shops" you will see the usual list.

Read the reviews. compare. Learn. don't ask for spoonfeeding. Learn about the limitations of the D3000.

You go look up at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp
Then you can decide to choose Canon, Nikon, Pentax or Sony.

    1) Do you want the video of DSLR?
If yes, go to buy Pentax K-X kit 18-55mm of $942 at SLRevo

Sure, it's a perfect paperweight. Some people manage to take pictures with it, though ...
