Default Picture of fire sparkles - how to improve?

    Hi all,

Recently, I took a picture of my son playing with sparkles.

May I have suggestions to improve the photography of such picture?

I wonder also what I should do to capture the sparkles more clearly.

    Some basic info: D90, M mode, shutter 1/100, f2.8, ISO3,200, zoomed to 135mm

    Thanks all

    Ouch again...

    Try shutter 1/60, f2.8, ISO200, 55mm zoom and don't tilt and don't use flash. Use a tripod.

    i love sparkled shots.

Just some of the settings i would use for mine.

ideally, shoot in a really low light environment. ( if it's a park, don't shoot directly under the lamp )
give the shutter speed of max 1/20 and slower. ( to capture the sparkle trail )
keep the ISO low to reduce grains.
    finally, tripod

Just tot i share my fave sparkled shot of my buddies and i.

    practice makes perfect. happy shooting!

actually i would do it differently

i like to include the person playing with the sparklers in the image
so i would do a rear curtain sync to correctly expose the person at the end of the exposure

tripod or not it is up to you

Isn't all those pics with the "light trails", all are consider long exposure?

yes, a long exposure (slow shutter speed)
add a rear curtain sync flash to freeze and light the subject together with the light trails

Yeah, use long exposure to get the light trails. You can start with 1/40sec and slower.

Use rear sync to freeze the object. You can read a little about it here:

maybe you should first read your camera/flash user manual first, then ask questions about stuff that you don't understand

A suggestion. If you need to photo sparklers, use the old plain uncovered sticks as they are dimmer and more sparklers. The new types produce too much smoke and light.
