If you want to look nice with the tooth, root canal treatment. If not, extraction.
Hmm, not really so in my experience though. All the treatment was done under local anesthesia, thus no pain nor anything at all, just some sensation of things going on in your mouth (maybe mouth tiredness?).

It's only when the LA wears off then slight tingling pain. But can take painkillers (i think they will prescribe, can't remember). Will be encouraged to eat on the non treated side for a while at least till your crown is fixed.

It might be helpful if you share which tooth it is in question.

There are a few implications for the different choices, the greatest factor probably being cost.
With a root canal you are looking at a lengthy process and several visits. Depending on the condition of the tooth and how much damage was done you may need a crown after your root canal.

If your tooth structure is badly weakened you may even need to have a post and then crown. Other surgeries that you may need to go through for crowning might include addition work on the neighbouring teeth, or crown lengthening (cutting away of your gums) to get the crown to fit. All these would not just be a long painful process but also cost quite a bit.

There is no guarantee though of saving the tooth - At the end of the day you might still face extraction. Only your dentist can best advise you.

If you opt for extraction you might want to consider getting a post fitted in to prevent bone loss. This is crucial especially if you are young. If you leave a gap, your neighbouring teeth will drift over time and your teeth will go out of alignment. Your other cosmetics solution might also include getting a bridge done but that would mean work on your neighbouring teeth.

Either way you are looking at quite a bit of money with extraction being the cheaper option. But like some of the other members have said money you can earn back...bone loss and tooth you cannot.

Don't worry too much about severe nerve damage... it's not everyday you end up with that and if your dentist is careful you'll be fine.

Root canal or extraction? This is a personal choice you need to consider and talk through with your dentist. We all have different circumstances and this is a photography forum not a medical one so I'd take all comments with a heavy pinch of salt. Do your own research and come to your own conclusion.

You might do good to google root canal and tooth extraction pros and cons.

i also support AH for wisdom tooth extraction (good dentist there), removed four tooth at one go under LA during my NS time, all fees covered under 11b, total about 1k plus.
another positive experience is that i suffer no nerve damage.

A pre root canal x-ray is a must to determine the level of infection. No point to continue if the infection level is bad, as the teeth might not be last long, maybe few months later u need to extract it again. No anesthesia is needed at least for me coz there will not be anymore pain due to the nerve already so called dead. An implant is another option after extraction, but pls bear in mind that the pain is killing u! Thats how i experience it.
Anesthesia is only effective during the process, but once it gone, damn! And the whole process took nearly 1 year to complete.

you should do a root canal + crowning,

extraction means you'll leave a hole there, and your other teeth might shift, and its more costly to extract and implant a new one then root canal.

I went with root canal. Made one bog hole in my pocket. But I figured that I will regret extracting my teeth (yes, I did twice) many years down the road....

    Get it pulled.

I've had Root Canal done 3 times and in each case after a year or two the tooth needed a crown and then that failed after a couple of years so the tooth was extracted. I don't even bother with RCT anymore, I just have it extracted. The money you save in the long run buys a good set of dentures.

Root canal and then crown it. Reason the teeth will darken bec the nerve is dead.

Crowning. Best is white gold (not really gold color), soft lasting but most expensive. Follow by ceramic which gives the natural look but can chip off if bite hard surface. Silver is most common and least expensive.

Planting. $4K per teeth locally. Was told can use medisafe up to 1.2K. Don't opt for cheapo ones as the screw will corrode after few years.

Wise advice. If your teeth cracked (diff from chipped), don't wait till the nerve gets infected. Straight go for crowning. Banding around the tooth will normally not work as it will break.

Other aspects to consider is whether the effect tooth is a front tooth or a molar. Front tooth not only beautify your smile but also helps in your pronounciation. The molar will help you in chewing your food.

If u decide to go for extraction because of RC cost and later regret, u r left with more expensive options like implant or bridging. The cheapest option is denture which also means no chewing gums
