For your pic, the girl on the left is distracting.
    I suggest a portrait crop.

Thanks Shaoken. What if I blur the background more? or cropping the pic is the way to go?

Good sharp focus on the subject's eyes. But as mentioned, a portrait shot would definitely be better. Not only does it remove the distraction from the left but also give more space to the top of the picture (the top of the boy's head is currently cropped). Unfortunately in this case the pic is taken so there isn't much you can do to the composition. Better luck next time

u have probably brought too much personal feeling into this photo. although ur title is a possibility of the boy's thoughts, ur guess is pretty much as good as mine.

other than that, composition is a little too tight.

oh yes.. ur write up seems to be confusing. how did u get the positive attitude? i dun see any 'positive attitude' anywhere here.. though the boy's expressionless face can be due to his 'wondering what life would bring'.

A fairly tight crop will do the trick. Don't worry about the top of the lads head being chopped off, in this case the facial expression is what will make or break the shot. Blurring the background artificially isn't going to be needed.

If you do a portrait crop for the boy, I don't think there's a need to blur the background.

    agreed on the distraction.
my eyes were swinging from the boy's eyes in the foreground, to the girl's eye in the background.

it seems to me that the boy is "curious" about your gear... color is too red (for my preference). sharp pic though...
    Why so serious... Son?

no, blurring the background will not help because you are just going to have a riot of colours that compete for attention.

    cropping here would be better

I would just do it in black and white. The colours are a distraction from what you want to portray as a sombre theme.

In fact, if his hand wasn't so high up the pole(prop, or whatever it is), would be fantastic as well. I find that distracting as well. Or maybe it's just his index finger that is 'blooming' from the sunlight.

Just a side comment, the Kadayawan Festival is a celebration of life. I feel that taking a photo with a sombre or depressing theme and juxtaposing it with an extremely positive festival, just doesn't go for me.

On the other hand, perhaps you saw the opportunity for capturing his 'oblivious-ness' in a sea of festivities. If that was the case, then the composition should not be so tight and should showcase him having a 'moment', while the rest around him are performing/celebrating.

    Cheers and good effort.

heyy. is it just me, or is the skin tone of the boy actually redder in the cropped image? or is it just me? (although i really think the 2nd photo is significantly redder!)
