If going to Nagiya in mid-dec, ie winter, should consider going onward to Takayama by train and Shiragawacho by bus. The latter is a world cultural heritage. These places should be beatiful in winter....

I lived in Inuyama. It has the oldest original castle in Japan. It is about half an hour north of Nagoya on the Meitetsu train. I spent 3 winters there and there wasn't much snow at all during winter. The heaviest snowfall melted after just one day. I think it snowed less than 10 times in those years. However in the mountains there should be lots of snow. The hills started at Inuyama so they weren't that high there.

To get to Takayama you can catch a JR Hida? express there from Nagoya station or do the fun way and take the JR train to Mino Ota. You can go either through Gifu or Tajimi. Then from Mino Ota take the local ghetto train all the way up to Takayama. It's not really ghetto, I just call it that because it's a local train. Slow but quite enjoyable.

Don't forget to visit the cult temple in Takayama. Their fish tank is mesmerizing.
    Have fun

The ticket on the Hida is about 3200 Yen. Local is cheaper.

You can use Hyperdia to find schedules and prices.

THe Hida is fastest. local takes about 4.5 hours. Express can take a little over 2 hrs. Can be done as a day trip if you get up early.

Depending on whether you're going to JR trains extensively over the period of time, a JR railpass may be the way to go.

Train schedule (departing/arriving stations) and the estimated fare can be obtained form the link below. Also a page from JNTO is included for Shiragawago for preliminary reference. On the side panel you'll also find Takayama and other nearby places to visit.
Best that you plan your trip before departure. Don't forget to get a Japanese language map from the tourist info counter, which you'll note is almost all Kanji; provided, of course, you can read chinese characters. MOst places in Japan use Kanji as their names. Like Takayama is written as "Gaoshan" in kanji. Shiragawago is written as "Baichuan Xiang"
They too have English map. Have fun.

back from takayama over the weekend. no snowing was observed. First drops of Snow fall today and i am just 2 days earlier to miss the snowing scene.

went there on Hida Express, ticket cost me 5000JPY++ instead of 3200JPY, was shock to see the bills when ordering from the counter.

Went to shinhortaga mountain the next morning. Fantastic views and scenery with ice caps mountains. Play with snow and took some photos.
