1.in what area is critique to be sought?

    composition.

2.what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?

to create a sense of profoundity; a feeling of the age-old tradition of surnames. also, since its my friend's 21st birthday party, to create a sense of responsibility. to signify that the weight of the family name is now on his shoulders.

3.under what circumstance is the picture taken?

at a friend's home, attending his birthday party. i want to capture the coming-of-age mood. the portrait of the family name is mounted on a wall with a table perpendicular to it. i want the surname to stand out, while keeping the other words in focus. thus had to reposition myself. but this allowed some of the white background into the picture.

4.what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture.

i think the composition could have been better, i.e better positioning to eliminate the white wall. or, another way to compose the shot. personally, i feel the big surname conveys what i want the viewer to feel: the weight of the family surname.

some PP has been done, i.e contrast and sepia toning. sharpening to add to the graininess.

Did you use auto-levels and increased the contrast? I think you have gone a little too heavy on it.

Unfortunately i feel nth on how you wanted the pic to convey. There appears to be too many elements screaming for attention in the pic. There is no sense of profoundity, and I cannot relate it to how its your friend's 21st birthday and have the sense of responisbility and the weight of the family name is on his shoulders. I always find that taking pictures of posters and murals, has never been able to capture enough attention or everything is screaming for attention that you cannot properly make use of it to take a picture out of it.
