yes the 14-24 is indeed a bit of a bother with regards to the front element sticking out.

however your consideration should extend further in that 14-24 is consummate wide angle and while it does not overlap with the 24-70, it is not as versatile as the 17-35 as a walkabout lens.

17-35mm is a great walkabout lens without having to switch lenses to 24-70 as frequently as you would with the 14-24.

14-16mm is really WIDE. for my purposes, i find 21mm is the comfort zone for most compositions (perhaps 20mm). it depends on your preferences on whether to go that wide.
