It depends on your budget and maybe choice of brand, there are many entry levels in the market nowadays. Better, visit dpreview or other trusted camera review website and get some more idea about dslr camera. They will provide conclusion and recommendation as well that will help you to decide.

Thereafter maybe head down to the recommended outlets(check out CS's price guide section) to try the few cameras you've narrowed down. To make an informed choice depends on the amount of homework and effort you put to reading up, asking etc. Happy reading and shopping! (that's the fun of it too!)

Get an overview about all entry level cams (check with vendors and review sites) and then get down to the shops and have hands on experience. Whatever feels good to you will serve you better than just a decision based on tech facts. All entry levels are decent and will serve you well. No need to narrow down only on Nikon and Canon.

Hi octarine just to share my opinion, personally i only chose between canon and nikon because im thinking of long term use of my lense or lenses in the near future. For me, buying dslr body is just the start, 100% you will invest on the equipments (lenses accessories). That is the reason why i think must carefully think which brand you want to stick with, or which brand got wide variety of lenses in the market. this is just my personal idea.

The bold marked line is a bit contradicting
I understand your point but if you have a closer look at Sony (and you can check with the "Alpha Guys"in detail) then you'll see that there is indeed a huge variety of lenses available for Sony. They have Carl Zeiss lenses in the standard line-up, what else can you wish for? (Yeah, I hear the calls for Leica ) Secondly, how many of those lenses will you buy finally? Check the reviews and you'll also see that the long line-up of Canon and Nikon lenses doesn't mean these lenses are all high end performers. Just had the chance to try a Sony (3xx, can't remember exactly) and the ergonomics are very good.

Thanks madmartian, xhui & Octarine for your comments...

Actually if comparing models is a tough work. Like Canon & Nikon as we know this 2 brand everyday non stop to discuss thier own good and quality.. never end!
As a beginner user, really need to depend on what we need like mention previously from senior friend at here..
    - What is your budget?
    - Rate yourself what which level your are?
    - What photo normally you take?
Answer the question above then we can start to choose what camera you want..
Oooops .. give comment to ppl pula... !! heeee

    Hi ccwinson...welcome.

Unless you have already made up you mind to get a particular brand and model of camera, it would not be a good idea to rush into buying which you might later find that it may be unsuitable due to various reasons. If the pns camera is already spoilt, then buying a dslr to replace it is a no brainer.

For an upgrader, the D3000 or D5000 are equally good cameras and is a natural progression from the pns. Have a nice holiday, take some photos and share with us here...we are all excited to see your photos...
