    Default Photoshop CS4 saving format

    1) if my raw file is nikon NEF, after editing i can't save it as NEF format?
    2) what's the best quality format i can save in CS4?

Please experiment with PSD, Photoshop native format to determine if it meets your need.

No you can't save it as a NEF, that's a proprietary format. Photoshop has a competing RAW format called DNG.

Depending on what you've actually done with your file, DNG or PSD will give you the best option.

Saving as DNG is prob the best option, esp since it's smaller in size, open format (good if in future u change software/camera etc).

Do read about DNG and its benefits here: http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/benefits.htm

I would be converting all my raw files to DNG soon after i work out a streamlined DNG workflow.
    sigh.

DNG should be loseless. You can set up so that camera raw or ACR will import and convert your raw file to DNG.
