Not shy if it is a small camera/compact
I have exactly the same feeling.

People pay more attention to you when you carry a bigger camera.

I feel more at ease shooting with a compact, and I don't really care about those who carry an expensive camera. I am more worried about not getting the shots that I want.

i do try to bring out my D90 as often as i could, even bringing my son to playground along amk ave 6. imagine all the parents using compact/hp looking at me, the only one with a dslr shooting my son. but i dun care, only my son (or any subject for that matter) is in my eyes and taking good picture is all that i care about.

even in outings, i dont compare gears, maybe just asking around for learning sake. nothing to be ashame of.

the "professional" photographer the school engages (despite all the student photographers like me) uses a higher-range Canon model (7D or 5D Mk II , can't really tell) with a whole assortment of white L telephoto lenses, while I use a 40D with the kit lenses, 18-55 and 55-250.

I do feel rather inferior, but then its not a contest of who has the better camera, its about the photos. So as the "professional" stood around like a statue, I ran around shooting from the best angle and trying out the settings. I didn't let richer people lower my morale, and at the end of the day still produced great photos which the teacher accepted.
well. i dunno maybe u met those statue photogs.

i was lucky! back in sec 3 when i was just starting out with slr, i was quite blur wad. u cant just change ur iso just like that. then flash also not too sure how to use.

yet the professional photographers from Alan photography offered help and advice for me! on how to operate the flash properly, what is the recommended iso to use etc. it was really an eye opener cause its not often someone who is on a job can actually take time to help out someone who is messing with old technology

    and i'm very grateful.

well actually my school is worse off than yr's.
Our "club" of student photographers isn't even an actual CCA, though a teacher is at the helm. It has no cameras of its own, relying on student's own equipment (hence the modest lenses). With not much guidance provided for us, I think the school wants to hire a pro to be safe.

Wow, its rare to have such people who willingly guide you.
maybe there were not many other student photographers other than you, so the pro could help you out.
In a way independent learning is good, though only for those who know they need it.

also remembered when i went for the canon free dslr course, a lot of people came in with expensive lens and body but with zero knowledge of shutterspeed and aperture kind of stuffs. not that i am very good, just saying.

True, It's the skill that matter.

Same here. I basically don't take much notice of this. I will however get pretty pissed if they think that either i am invisible or they are, by setting up right in front of me.

i tink i'll feel 'shy' only when sm1 next to me is carrying a smaller n more compact camera than mine...yet snaps better pictures....imagine if ur a pornstar with an 8 incher and u cant even last 5min...and your fellow star with a 3incher is still humping away for the next 30min....wah very shy!

Don't worry about people knocking into you.
When you carry camera as big as this, everyone will know you are crazy
