Thread: Which DSLR should I get?

Default Which DSLR should I get?

Hi, I'm very new to this community and photography. I'm thinking of getting a DSLR but I have no idea which to get and I need it for my project. I'm getting a DSLR not only for project purpose but because I'm interested in photography and would wish to learn the ropes as I do my project.

I'm planning to take land/city-scape and candid.

Could anyone recommend which Canon/Sony should I get?

Pretty much all DSLRs can deliver what you need, just some better then others.

if its just for a project, why not ask someone that you know who owns a dslr to help you take the pictures? What if you do not like your dslr after buying it? Another option is to rent the dslr+lens.

Don't just buy a dslr thinking your pics will automatically become better.
But if you really want to buy a dslr, do consider the entry level dslr from all the major brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus etc.
Just go their individual website and read up.

yup, nowadays entry level DSLRs cost no more than a compact, say Sony's A230 cheapest among all brands (coupled with kit lens somemore) only at $699 in major stores.

Nikon (D3000) or Canon (1000D) costs somewhat below $900 if you know where to get them.

so.... you have no idea which DSLR to get (because likely you don't understand what the differences are), and yet you know you NEED it for your project...?

to spend that much money just for a project.... seems wasteful.
Why not rent an older-gen DSLR (if you really feel that only a DSLR will get you the shots you need) for a week or 2? Shouldn't cost you more than 60 or 70 (if you're a student, maybe got discount).
    Exploring! :)

I'm getting it partly for my project and partly 'cos I'm interested in doing photography.

Wow that's quite a big budget to start with.
Bearing in mind that any major brand will do, if you intend to go the Nikon route with that budget I would say a D90 with kit lens 18-105, plus a 50 f/1.8. You should have leftover for an ok 2nd-hand tripod like the Slik Sprint Pro for your landscapes.

Get the Sony Alpha A230 for $699 including a kit lens!

    Can't beat that deal!

If you do landscapes you do not need very exceptional ISO performance. And you do not need large aperture lenses. The sony will do very well! and save you tons of money too. Sony alphas are pretty good too.

You should focus on the main point: the portfolio. The camera is your tool, don't spend too much time with it. What exactly makes you think that you need a DSLR to make good pictures? Have a look at these pictures, taken with a simple PnS camera. Of course, the guy spend some time also with Photoshop. But Photoshop can only enhance what is already there: composition, intention, message ...

Wah...with that budget you can get a Sony A550 with a Carl Zeiss 16-80mm already. If you top up a bit more, you could get an extended warranty and a 50mm f1.8 lens already.

A good dslr for good pictures is an old concept. The prevalent new concept among new camera users seems to be shoot first and then fix in photoshop.

so my advise, get a used entry level dslr with an 18-200mm lens + flash. And then learn to use Photoshop/Lightroom and etc.

*For landscape and portrait, you dont really need 7fps and if all you are printing is up to A4 then a 4 megapixel camera is enough liao.

Ooops. Then I'll lower it to $1000.

Yep... so in your case, just nice $2k can land you a 500D with a 18-200mm kit I think, that or buy 2nd hand 450D and a 18-200mm.

IF you're serious for landscapes, this implies wide-angle... so a full-frame is what you're looking for, look through the other threads for more info on this. Might want to invest in a proper wide angle lens for that.

Welcome to CS and the overflow of suggestions =)

Thanks! I'm getting a DSLR partly because I'm into photography and would like to take this opportunity to learn the ropes in photography too.
