All brands have some models with weather sealing. So far, I've only seen Olympus E-3 surviving a complete submersion in water. More than once too. Several cases now.

I think you got it wrong. Market share increase has nothing to do with actual total sales increase. Market share measures the percentage of sales a specific company has compared to the total average sales.

Total sales is an absolute number (as in dollars).
Market share of A brand = sales of a A brand / total sales in the entire market by all brands.

So it is very possible that the Sony's market share has doubled, but its total sales can be triple, quadruple or half or 1/10. It doesn't matter. But looking at the tremendous growth of the DSLR market nowadays, i would say every company's DSLR sales have grown well. Including Canon whom has lost some market share. But I am sure their sales is also growing.

It's like a zen thing; you and your camera must be as one, then you can go forth and make nice pictures. No use having a "good" system that you somehow feel uncomfortable with.
    Well said.

OT: would a Sony A550+ SAL1605 kit or Nikon D90 VR kit both same price be better for a newbie? which camera is superior?

    Definitely A550
except for video...it can easily bested the D90 in term of price/and spec
    5-7 fps
    iso up to 12800
    quick liveview af
    auto hdr
    higher mega pixel

but personally feel the d90 will have a better built

The 16-105mm is superb. Sharpness is comparable to the CZ 16-80mm.

is that amongst proffesionals as well or just other slr sales?

i'm a canon user but i have to admit between 2006 and 2009 the nikon D3 has probably stolen a fair share of proffesional canon camera users...
i dont think the professional market changed much. i think the one that moved alot are the enthu and entry level markets.
