learn the necessary skills to make you more productive

eg if you need to work with photoshop many time a day
then spend some time to learn how to do it better, faster, cheaper

while at the same time, be able to charge more

In my industry, Better, Faster and Cheaper don't come together.
You can only have two out of these three.
In my opinion, to be realistic, Singapore can certainly become Better and Faster. This will put us in good stead with global market and MNC's. But to be cheaper, no. That's not the way to go. There will forever be another cheaper country.

    So what I am doing?
    Go for more courses myself.
    Expand my knowledge base.
    Automate my work process.
Employ IT integration into my company and get my employees deeply involved.
    Re-train my staff.

Everything becomes Better and Faster. But unfortunately things will never be Cheaper like this.

I learn while studying project management about Speed, Cost and Quality.

I think better belongs to Quality.
    Faster belongs to Speed.
    Cheaper is obviously Cost.

The lecturer told us that there is no way to achieve all 3 at the same time. When the PM is pushing staff to achieve all 3, soon he will be left alone.
Either staff will quit or they all die (typically in slavery schenario).

In many case, actually Speed and Cost target can be achieved assuming you have unlimited amount of cheap labour.
Quality on the other hand may suffer and normally this is not so obvious from the start and during the course of the project.
It will only be obvious when it is towards the completion or during operation time.

I really feel it is a foolish mentality.

Higher efficiency leads to more unemployment!

I remember in the changi prison once invested in a state of the art bakery automation... so the foreign consultants help them design a state of the art fully automated brad making dept. In the old camp, about a hundred people got to intervene with the old machines and they had to learn to control the semi auto baking belt... And so xxxx millions were spent and the justification is to help prisoners learn a new skill in baking bread so they have a better future. During the launch, viola, the three story high (half football field ) automated robot cranked its machine and worked like a beauty.... Guess what?

The robot only needed 3 highly skill computer button pressing crew! So all the prisoners went to packing room to do packing!

This is the effect of efficiency. This will weed out more jobs and i am shocked they have not clue what this can lead to.

This is he theory, the reality is loss of more jobs. Even wonder why there are retrenchment in developed countries? It is not because there are inefficiency, but because there are fewer jobs due to more productivity. This is something politician never understand, because their knowledge stopped at the book.

I'll let my employer choose either 2 from me: Cheap, Fast, Good.

It has always been, and will always be.

i would say this nation should start to produce products that is sought after. basically there is none that sells (other than the ousted creative MP3 player). look at France, isreal, japan, america, Switzerland etc.the bottomline here is no matter how CBF we become, if they stopped coming to invest in this country, we r going to starve.. all i could think of what we are good in are oil rig / light tank / ... we should made full use of those talented pool of foreigners to propel further. not jus letting them sit ard...

ideas and innovation go a great way to
instead of telling people to become cheaper and better, perhaps we should be more innovative, and create products which fulfill a need in the world?
We need to work on our education system and allow more people to have more time and space to be less "practical".

Senior citizens who are working are already cheaper in every sense may it be CPF contri & wages.

We WILL walk that path so its already cheaper.

Faster will be a bit of prob becos old liao, can't help it but slow.

Better could be true also cos senior all have very good work & life experience

Frankly, in order to be cheaper, our standard of living MUST COME DOWN, how to accept a $700 pay cheque per mth if a new public housing is $200k+++ in ulu estate??? Not forgetting utility heading north also...
