Ronnie Whelan: Rafa Benitez sacrificing league

    By Soccernet staff

    November 2, 2009

Ronnie Whelan has accused Rafael Benitez of prioritising the Champions League in order to secure a job abroad, and the Liverpool legend also believes the manager's "days are numbered" at Anfield.

    Paper Round: Focus on Rafa

Speculation is surrounding Benitez's position once more after Liverpool were defeated 3-1 by Fulham on Saturday. The loss at Craven Cottage was the club's sixth in seven games in all competitions and leaves them nine points off top spot with 11 games played.

With the score at 1-1, Benitez substituted Fernando Torres to general bemusement and later admitted that he had done so with Wednesday's Champions League game against Lyon in mind as the striker had been nursing a groin injury.

Whelan has used the incident as evidence for his theory that Benitez has already abandoned the league - a situation that would not sit well with Liverpool fans as Manchester United aim for a record 19th title this season.

"It's all gone wrong with the manager and he's shown exactly where his priorities lie,'' Whelan told RTE Television. "He wants to win the European Cup so he can get a job in Europe. For me, his days have got to be numbered at Liverpool.

"He's taken players off who are the only players who are going to give you a chance of winning the game. And he drags them all off because he's got a game on Wednesday.

"When I saw the team I thought he's not bothered about this game. He's putting all his eggs in one basket and I can't see why he's done it."

    sorry folks.

there will be time when passionate ppl do not share the same views.

while i m of the view that the club is the priority, the rest are dispensable.

no one is bigger than the club. whoever failed to deliver, must go.

rafart bendhisdick has done well for us in the last FIVE seasons. this season however, is definitely his last in the club. he has taken us as far as he possibly could.

good luck to bendhisdick, he will not be missed.

it is time for us to move on into a new chapter, one that does not have rafart bendhisdick in the script.

we will not beat lyon. i'm certain we will buang and kena knock out of the Euro Cup becos the team simply has no confidence in the manager and his constant insistence on using players that are very much limited in terms of ability.

the seven suckers are some of the worst LFC players i have ever seen, much worse than mark walters!

    DOZEN DOUBTFUL FOR LIVERPOOL

Liverpool could be without 12 players for their crucial Champions League clash with Lyon on Wednesday night.

Should results go against Rafa Benitez's side, they would be all but eliminated from the competition.

Steven Gerrard's continuing groin problems mean he is almost certainly out of the trip to France, while Fernando Torres is not fully fit and was withdrawn as a precaution after an hour against Fulham at the weekend.

Albert Riera's hamstring problems mean he will miss the game, while Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Glen Johnson, Fabio Aurelio and David Ngog all missed the defeat at Craven Cottage, and are big doubts for Wednesday night.

Alberto Aquilani was absent at the weekend with a virus, and even if he recovers from that Benitez will be reluctant to use him as the Italian has only just returned from the injury that saw him miss the first three months of the season.

Martin Kelly and Diego Cavalieri are also doubtful with an ankle injury and the flu respectively, while Philip Degen was not included in the Champions League squad.

In addition, Degen and Jamie Carragher were both sent off at Fulham, and although Benitez has promised to appeal both decisions, as things stand they will both be suspended from their Premier League game against Birmingham next weekend.

i think whelan was a great player for LFC,i've no doubt about it but which club has he managed? Many players/ex-players can only criticised a manager but can they really manage a club succesfully? Look at legends like Rush...Dalglish...still connected with the club...so far i've not hear/read of them criticising Rafa instead they've been supporting him...

not even november and we have lost 5 times in the league.

1). he has failed to replace an influential player in Alonso.

2). he used the alonso fund to sign a lame duck in aqualanlan.

3). he failed to adequately replace sami hyypia.

rafart din't have the best fortune or was it all destiny?

he won the Euro Cup in 2005 with a large chunk of players signed by Gerard Houllier.

perhaps he will be a better manager in the la liga.

i am so sick and tired of his weird tactics and his insistence on fielding some of the Seven Suckers!

    goodbye bendhisdick.

we have all supported rafart bendhisdick when he first arrived. we have all backed him all the way till 2007, 2008 when he finally snapped and become erratic.

fast forward to 2009, sorry, most of us LFC fans have had enuff.

he is a manager that is simply worse than Gerard Houllier.

but sad to say, rafart bendhisdick is fighting a losing battle to hold onto LFC's hotseat.

RAFA`S FUTURE ON NEXT THREE GAMES - REPORTS

    Posted 02/11/09 08:12

Rafa Benitez's future could hinge on Liverpool's next three matches, according to reports.

After their 3-1 defeat to Fulham at the weekend, Liverpool play Lyon on Wednesday night, and a defeat in France could spell the end of their hopes of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League.

After that they have two home league games against Birmingham and Manchester City, before their penultimate Champions League clash against Debrecen, which may well be meaningless should things not go to plan against Lyon.

Although Benitez signed a new contract last season that means it would cost upwards of 20million to dismiss him, The Daily Mail reports that pressure could be put on Liverpool's owners by outside investors.

The paper claims that Tom Hicks, George Gillett and managing director Christian Purslow will study these upcoming games before making 'what could be a very big decision'.

Liverpool have now lost six of their last seven games (although one of those was with a shadow side in the Carling Cup), and as well as their problems in the Champions League, they sit sixth in the Premier League table, nine points behind leaders Chelsea after losing five of their 11 games so far.

When Benitez was asked about his future, he simply replied: "My future is against Lyon."

yes the league table doesnt lie...thats what most people say anyway...tell me how many games last season we really played well & deserved to win? Many early season games we won last season were down to luck...or good teams create their own luck..many people say...we could have at least draw against sunderland...the picnic ball goal shouldnt stand...we could even win the carling cup tie agsint arse as i think its an even game...there are games that we just needed some luck to win...or unlucky to lose...i'm not getting carried away to join the large crown just simply its a large crowd to want Rafa sack...convince me if there is a manager to take over from Rafa that LFC fortune will change...u'd think Oneill...but can he really? how long will he need to bring glory to this club before people,u inclusive, started to think he also not good enough? we need stability...Rafa has given us that...& just bcoz this season we didnt start with a bang doesnt means we'll have a bad season...this is the time the club needs the supporters the most...i'm sure bro cheesecake is not another glory hunter like those from manure...

i oni know that last season we gifted the EPL to mancircle utd by drawing easy fixtures at home, playing 4-5-1.

rafart's ability, no doubt abt it. but it is very clear that he has lost the confidence of the training room.

the next defeat will prove that. rafart has lost it.

by the way, i formed my own opinion of him since 2 seasons ago. the other LFC fans who shared the same view as me about rafart, it is just that, they have their own minds and they have watched the games and they formed their own conclusion.

i'm not surprised that we are the majority of the LFC fans who want rafart out. he is doing more harm to the team than he is bringing in good, now.

maybe some other fans will only be happy if we finish outside the top four and end up empty handed, in order to see the plain fact that is before our very eyes.

that, RAFART BENDHISDICK is no longer the man to lead us.

Like you said, Rush, Dalglish and Sammy Lee are still connected to the club, you expect them to openly criticise Rafa???
They are after all loyal servants and will definitely support the club through and through, so even if you put bro Cheesecake or the shaggy long fringe doggy in charge, they will still stand behind and support.

The other ex-players are still connected to the club in various other ways and they still support the club, but does not means they cannot criticise the manager or the way the club is run. Do you need to be a manager before you can criticise or comment?

Everyone is baffled by Rafa's selection and tactics, even though u can say he is trying to focus on CL but... this is way way beyond me.

Basket, the way you question Whelen... I think we can confirm you are Rafa in disguise

so what if one have all the proud records etc etc etc, glorious past etc etc etc

i remember that george graham has a glorious past, winning titles and cups with gooners yet on his return to management with hotcakes, he buanged spectacularly.

past glories and records count for nothing in the current context. rafart may have won this, won that but now, he has lost the confidence of the team. a team without any morale will go on and lose more games.

not that i fancy sacking a gaffer midway through the season but it seems to me that it is now a necessity to rid ourselves of this idiot who is bringing in more harm to the team!

imagine, degenerate starts a game and get sent off!

wah.. must be kuyt and lucas told you that!!!

3-1 lost to fulham.. but don't forget how many of the players were injured..

sack Rafa and pay him 20mil? then where to find the money to hire the next manager? and how on earth will the next manager find the money to buy new players?

can't blame Rafa for saving Torres for Lyon's match.. it's in the champions league where all the money is!
