It is as good as implanting a timebomb into your business. Not a small issue especially those user who have clients photos stored in their PC being wiped out.

In the first place, they are forcing all of us who joined the competition to download our images into their laptops. We cannot submit virtually nor in hardcopy.

Would it meant that by adding a terms and condition, i have the right to steal password and information from your pc without being sued by you?

I guess you are not infected by the virus.
Not everyone PC is installed with anti-virus, there are users whose PC aren't even protected at all. At least a mass email sent to all and make an awareness to those who need help can contact them.

All the more if it is not small company, then they should uphold their reputation and service because user have high expectation of them. Otherwise why would you want to buy a DSLR camera from a reputable company. Why not get from those China brand.

The organisers could have used any flavour of freeware Linux (such as Ubuntu and Fedora) That would have been the most cost effective way to kerb this totally foreseeable problem.

    wait first.

See whether if they will come down to remove the virus if the pc dont have antivirus or the pc antivirus cannot detect because even though cannot detect is possible still there and not all user are IT saavy.

If they say must buy/download antivirus ownself or need to go a location for servicing without any compensation, then something else.

If they come down anyway to do a thorough virus scan, then very good job.

The trojans/virus seem to be of one single type, so more probably than not their course of action would be to do a wide scan of the laptops that were used to upload, identify the virus and then mass-email the people affected with a URL linking the removal kit.

    Should be pretty harmless.

this virus is usually harmless and spreads thru network. main purpose is to create high load and crippled networks.

Free antivirus = no good ? Expensive ones = good ?
Well, I downloaded the free antivirus from cnet for my office laptop, which had a well known anti virus installed and maintained by my IT team. In April,a colleague plug in her infected laptop into the office network and infected everyone who was plugged into the network at that time.

My office anti virus failed to detect the trojan, but the free antivirus managed to detect and block it. IT dept had to clean 200+ laptop after the intrusion.

Anyway anti virus ain't expensive. NIS can be had for less than S$40, a decent filter will easily cost more than that.

this has been mentioned in a thread on the rights people have in taking pictures in shopping malls etc...

to put it from what i remembered, by right you are allowed to take pictures...at the same time, the management of the building has the right to refuse entry for you into the building ...so indirectly if they do not wan you to take pictures, they can ask you not to or refuse you entry...(that's about what i remembered)...

so basically you do need permission to take pictures in malls....security guards are more sensitive to ppl with SLRs rather than Pns thinking that you are from some newspaper(on a general day)...

for photomarathon day, its probably back to the same point, that they have the right not to allow you entry...

Yep. When I joined Canon Photomarathon 2 years ago, my friends and I went to Tampines Mall, we were asked to keep our DSLRs. (We were only Sec 2 at that time.)

Actually Suntec City also don't allow, but the security guards are very bias. (They scold students for taking photos while they let off the adults.)

I heard that you need a black and white to take photos in malls. :/

Actually every year, the photos from student cat are more interesting than those from open cat. Photos that have been repeating for years are such as the tomb's photo, kayaking photo, changing clothes photo, holding hands photo.

But students who joined the competition now are far more lucky than when I joined years back.. We gotta pay $10 at that time and were competing with the adults. But in the meantime, we had more goodies compared to now. lol.

    Don't think $40 is a lot even one can afford a laptop/desktop or a pns/dslr.
And one always can go for the alternate method which use the free-antivirus.

    From actual experience on-the-ground,

It is "always advisable" that before you even start showing your camera skills, talk to the security guards or anyone with access to the building management. Tell them your true intentions and what is it that you wanted to take photos of. I managed to talk to one of the guards in one of the shopping districts somewhere in Singapore *wink wink nudge nudge* to ask for permission to take pictures of people. (Well apparently there was some event going on inside the building so their strict rules are a bit more relaxed to cater for it.)

I quote from the guards, "Your picture must have people in it, in order to qualify it as permissible." Apparently, the building management considers taking photographs of interior buildings without people in it as copyright infringement.
