tt said, unless u have the dough to spurge on cpu lens, getting d5000 will left ur with little choices for lens selection.

Why does everyone keep harping about this lack of an AF motor in the D5000, like it's some sort of crippling handicap? Does everyone think that Nikon is such a stupid company to keep producing such a camera if nobody will buy it?

LOOK AROUND... most people walking around with digital SLRs are using an entry level camera with its KIT LENS... and nothing more.
These are the vast majority of DSLR buyers that all the camera makers are targeting with their entry level models. This is called marketing. You produce a product specific to your target market, and market it such that it is attractive to them.

You really think that the average entry-level DSLR owner will buy a D5000 (for example) and go... "damn, it can't autofocus with my 28/2.8D, 50/1.8D, 85/1.8D, etc..." ???

If someone goes "I'm serious about improving my photography and slowly building up my arsenal of speciality lenses", then I wouldn't recommend D5000. But if a newbie asks me "should I buy a D5000?" and offers no further info, I'd say "Why not?"

    1 point to correct:
    the AF 50mm f/1.8D is a CPU-lens
    the AF-S DX 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 is a CPU-lens

One has an AF motor built-in, the other doesn't. But both have a CPU to communicate certain parameters to the camera via the electrical contacts.
