Default Photography & Hotel Recommendations for Tokyo

Following on from my earlier Taipei thread, I'm now going to Tokyo!

Anyone has hotel recommendations bearing in mind my requirements here:

An additional requirement is ideally there's a post office nearby; I always end up sending a lot of parcels of goodies home!

Finally, any recommendations on photography goodies? I'm more interested in weird accessories and equipment; not so much mainstream lenses/bodies.

Thanks for the help so far; I've more or less settled on the Shinjuku area as the best bet. Anyone who has recommendations on hotels in that area that would satisfy my needs?

    Thanks!

I used to stay around Shirokane area close to Shinagawa station when I'm in Tokyo. But Shinjuku is a good choice too. There are seedy parts of Shinjuku and more normal areas too, so just have to be careful. Of course being closed to Shinjuku station is a good thing, although you will probably get lost there for the first week. There are camera shops there too, so if you prefer not to be tempted into buying something then stay away from Shinjuku.

I really can't think of an "ideal" place to stay in Tokyo. They all seem to be not too far from a metro or JR station, and there are post offices all over the place. From what I heard from people, Shinjuku seems to have a lot of accomodation options.

I've given up on buying large mainstream stuff as well. Map Camera makes a good browsing choice, especially their rangefinder sections. There's another more interesting shop in Shinjuku around the same area as Map Camera, I can't remember the name of the shop, I just know where it is. Looks like a hidden shop on the second floor with cameras/lenses people seem to have forgotten about. You can find deals there if you know your stuff, but the conditions are varying. My cheap thrills for Japan nowadays are the cheap 300Y service straps that they give free when you buy a camera. No brand, no frills, comes with antislip pad sewn in and works well with rangefinders. At least it doesn't shout. Service tissue papers are also nice (!!!), usually given out as advertisement... I have one in my camera bag all the time. Women don't like it, citing roughness, but for us men tissue is tissue. IF you're into film, nice to stock it up in Tokyo.
