    That's my personal take anyway.
Ok, this is my NS story. I was trained as a Field Engineer Specialist, we do stuff like bridging and demolition, went Thailand twice for training.
Was posted to 1 Guards as a Pioneer Commander. I went through all the Guards training and crap, did training exercises in Brunei and Australia.
Brunei is sibeh xiong, can die.

After my men in Guards unit ORD, I was posted to HQ SCE to be a Formation Training Specialist, doing adminstration staff, 9-5 job.

Believe it or not, my time doing Admin at HQ SCE is a tougher experience than my time at 1 Guards. And relating to my work in a HQ position,
it's definitely not a waste of time cause the experience gained is more beneficial to my working life as a civilian after leaving SAF.

Your interpretation of NS is pretty narrow.

every experience has something to bring away.

even the most mundane job of washing the toilet, there is something to be learnt from that.

it depends on your mentality, your attitude. if your mind is closed, even if you get the best opportunities in the world, you will learn nothing.

    How did it benefit you?

Working in a Formation HQ, there are so many crabs wallking around, Formation S1-S4, Chief of Engineers, so many bosses around.
The experience is like working in a coporate environment, it really is. Besides the regulars and NSF, there are many civilians working too.

As a Formation spec, I must learn to do reports and presentations for my Officer, who in turn will use them during his presentation to the higher level.

A lot of things I did are very adminstrative, very similar to what someone working in an office will need to do. I used to know nuts about doing paperwork before
enlistment, but I learned a lot during my time in the HQ because my Staff Sergeant is a guniang who's super obsessed with proper documents filing and inventory.

And not to forget the office politics as well
