Default S&S underwater housing for Canon 10D

Hi, just wondering if anyone here has a plan to get the above for your 10D in the next coming few months time? I'm thinking maybe we can do the MO to get further discount.

The current price tag is S$2850 (quoted by Andrew) and could be the *cheapest* 10D housing we able to get locally (Subal cost ard S$6800+ . Ikelite might be cheaper once available, but does anyone know if we can get it in SG?). Correctly me if I'm wrong.

It's still expensive esp consider that I don't own any port or strobes

Got a brief quote from Pratama (Local distributor for Ikelite) before, he quoted about $1900.

I think although that is a good idea, but I would rather spend that few thousand dollars on a good lens, for example a 70-200 IS Lens. $2850 is more then the body of my 10D, you will still have to take care of the other parts such as lenses attachment, will definately cost a bomb...... way out of my league.

There are a few options available really....Inon is another option u should consider (www.oceanicfocus.com McHale Song ). I love their strobes...

Ikelite is generally cheaper because of the material used and common mold for housings. Anything that is availabel at www.ikelite.com, David of Divemasters can bring it in. However, it is better for u to know what u want as they do not keep stock of most stuff.

I am using ikelite and the US customer service is legendary. Some see it as poor QC (hence the repairs)

Sea&Sea is good too in this respect becos of Andrew being here.

Before committing, know what strobes work with what housing......Sea n Sea and Inon strobes do not work with Ikelite housing, although Ikelite says syn cords will be avail in Jan (USA).

As for the high cost of housing, well, guess u have no choice if u wanna bring a DSLR down underwater. U can buy all the expensive lens in the world but if ur intention is to see your DSLR underwater, u cannot run away from the housing and strobes. Oh have I mentioned the arms for holding strobes will cost you more than an arm and leg?

Eric

would you please let me know where Pratama is?

I should admit, a good lens like 70-200 IS L or 24-70 L is my dream lens and I do not own any of it. However, I also believe the eye behind the lens is more important than a good lens. I found myself still have lots of room to improve with my current lens set before jumping in to get a superb lens as no matter how good a lens is, it doesn't help you to compose nor deciding the mood you want in a pic.

While a superb lens doesn't help much in my current situation, to get an underwater housing may broaden the my shooting subjects and most importantly I can reuse my current lens set. The only major disadvantage I can see now is, the housing is specially custom made for specific model which mean the reusable is nearly impossible or limited. Sometime I come to think that using a analog SLR or even a consumer Digicam might be a better choice as DSLR world changed too fast.

We all have our own point of view and do not need to have to agree with each other. I think that's the beauty of this world.

Thanks for sharing with me your opinion.

your information is really helpful. I don't know there is a local distributor for Jonah and INON housing before this. I've gave Song a ring, and found the price for Jonah's housing is almost the same as Sea&Sea and although INON's price is not known yet, it should be somewhere there.

I've made an appointment with Song for viewing the Jonah housing for 10D this Saturday 4pm at Funan centre, anyone interested to join?

I don't really like the build of Ikelite, however if it's so much cheaper, why not.

I guess what I can do now is try hard to save up a bit.

Anyway, I'm really appreciate your information. Thanks
