all of 10 sec on google

    http://china.org.cn/travel/travelogu...16803215_3.htm

Also not listed in the site above is the area around 80,000 Workers Stadium (in Chinese its called Ba Wan Ti Yu Chan)

I normally do not like shooting hotels but Shanghai has a few very old world hotels that are so beautiful....

Try Astor House Hotel at No.15 Huangpu Road......1800s to early 1900s Shanghai.... this is IMHO the BEST as far as old feel is concerned

Old House Inn sends you straight back to 1930s Shanghai ....

Try to grab lunch or dinner at the Peace Hotel (He Ping Jiu Dian) ....

Hong Qiao area has tons and tons of condos.... BUT there are many little pockets of old housing from the 70s Communist era including several still functioning Government Guest Houses for VIPs and dignitaries

But generally a good tip would be to get onto the Metro line and just explore Shanghai ... it will take you a few weeks to fully cover most areas.... so choose wisely

if its your first trip to shanghai and you have one day only then i suggest the normal MUST GO places to see and eat at

later other trips back then be more adventurous

Otherwise make the sacrifice.... skip the KTVs and go to bed early every night and get up before day break (should be around 5.30am) and walk around and see a whole diferent face to shanghai .... I dont think you dont even need to go far...... just step out anywhere and get back by 8am get your breakfast and shower up before starting your work

Shanghai never sleeps.... it just changes face throughout the day and night

Don't go to the Bund or the Peace Hotel area as everything there is under renovation. The Bund had been torn down and you will not be able to get up there. If you only have one day in Shanghai, I would suggest you can go to Yu Yuan. Although it is a populer tourist attraction, you can still find a bit of old Shanghai there.

Yu Yuan has good food, esp the famous Nanxiang xiaolongbao. There are a few old streets (not the shopping area Shanghai Old Street) nearby which is nice for shooting.
Can also walk around the adjacent roads around Huaihai road, where there are lots of old buildings, e.g. Ruijin Hotel area.
Another area not to be missed is Duolun Road, there is a street beside the main attraction which has stalls selling groceries, lots of locals do their marketing there.

Peace hotel will be reopening soon. And it will be managed by a famous 5 start hotel chain but I just can't remember which one if my life depended on it. Getting old...

Another interesting place is the Dong Tai Lu Antiques Market. very picturesque. 东台路古董市场, 靠近西藏路

The xiaolong bao is no longer good already.

One thing you have to try is the shengjian bao 生煎包. The best is in this hole in the wall joint called XiaoYangShengJian 小扬生煎. It is cheap and good. It is so well known that magazines in japan and Korea feature it. A must try. Expect long lines. Not a nice nice restaurant. Like a local roadside stall. But super packed, super long lines, super good.

It is located near People's square (人民广场). Address is 上海市静安区吴江路54号&60号(近南京西路. No. 54 and No. 60 WuJiang Road. close to Nanjing West Road.

And if you have one full day, why not visit Zhouzhuang?

You can take the bus from shanghai indoor stadium. The ticket is 150, and it includes the to and from bus ride, the entry ticket to Zhouzhuang including entry to the major attractions there. Best to take the 7:30am bus, you will come back and reach Shanghai at around 3:30pm.

Here are some of the pics I took there. I went in winter. It will look a lot different now.

yes, Zhouzhuang is nice, but you got to be early... best to stay overnight there. When I was there, it was so crowded and commercialised, quite difficult to take a pic without tourists in the background, esp at the Double Bridge area. Other water villages liked Xitang and Wuzhen are beautiful too.

I went on a early rainy cold winter morning. And it was a different zhouzhuang that I saw. That is why I love it.

Part of 朱家角 is already quite commercialized as well. Thing about 朱家角 is that the buildings are too new. 乌镇is also getting there. Sad but true. Even less known watertowns like 同里, 西溏 are all getting very commercialized.
