Manual mode then set time as bulb mode (>30s), Bulb mode), use a cable release or lockable shutter release so you don't need to hold on the button to cause shaking.

For battery, usually are sufficient for a few short hour, if needed get vertically grip so you can add one more battery.

Get a grip and bring spare batteries.

Next alternative, use DC adapter and connect to a car.

    Can check out this thread.

One good way is to use software stacking method.

The shot was taken by starting more than 40 shots of 1 minute exposure each.

So far, I believe D300's battery can last quite long.

Looks good. Think i will give it a couple of tries first before the actual star trail.

nowadays no one uses 1 hour exposure

most people will stitch 30-1 minute exposures together, software can be obtained foc on internet.

Oops... I have ceased to exist

But speaking from 50D experience, the battery can last almost 2hrs...

    ok, most people...

it 's just not common anymore, at least not for digital.

btw, do you get a lot of hot pixels when you do long long exposures?

Hmm, yeah, prev on my 10D, so I usually do my star trails using film.
for the 50D, haven't had the chance to do alot, but the noise reduction seems to have removed most of them

Looks like i am not the only one still living in cave. personally i prefer the traditional way of getting it right the first time. shoot first edit later might prove too much for my patience.

    So...
first try -software with multiple shots
    second try - power adapter
worst to worst case - do film

    Thanks guys for the advices.

Hmmm if the camera is set to every two hrs for a hr long exposure without a constant power supply ( cable ) will a enel4 batt last that long. if it does require to change batts halfway, will the preset settings for the timer goes back to default... got to read my manual again argh

Singapore has stars too! Erm i shot without grip tho.. jus tripod and camera (jus rmb to make sure ur tripod dont block ur change of batt or mem card).. change after an hour half or so when batt is almost dead, swap and charge haha! Alternatively u can conserve more batt by offing the preview, the liveview if ure using.. erm stuff like that

    cheers.
